Okay I need help here.
I'm trying to make a Hive Tyrant that will have 3 Gurads and will block the rest of my brood coming in. Now my problem is what weapons and upgrades should I get him? Toxin sacs a Venom cannon Barbed strangler enhanced senses and warp blast?
Maybe just a warpblast and a venom cannon and scything talons?
Oh I just can't decide I need help.
Don't bother with the Warp Blast. The Venom Cannon is a solid pick, however. Some people prefer the Barbed Strangler, as the range complements the Venom Cannon nicely. I prefer to take a single set of Devourers for a little bit more reliable anti-infantry, though. Both are solid picks.
Instead of the Warp Blast, consider taking either Shadow in the Warp if you play a ton of Psyker armies, or Psychic Scream so long as your opponents aren't Fearless.
Yeah I have my Tyrant set up with a VC and Devs too. It works out really nice and I think compliments each other nicely. He can handle most anything.
I've had some good succes with my alternatieve guntyrant who's armed with BS and TL-devourers, he does a good job at taking down infantry.
My personal favorite is VC & BS. 36" on both and versatility to chose the best target at the moment be it a lighter vehicle or infantry. Besides a large template at 4BS with no deviation is always a good thing.
Depending on the size of the game, hive tyrant with venom/tl-devourer is what I call the perfect swing creature. For example at 1500, you probably and should have a carnifex with venom cannon/barbed straggler combo. However, at this level it doesn't quite justify having 2 of them to take on vehicles. In fact, the venom cannon on a strength 6 tyrant with bs 4 is statistically better than vc/bs carni at armors 12 and under, even at 13, and only worse at 14. Plus he has synapse and an awesome choice of another weapon. I prefer devourer for the other slot cause its reroll to hit and reroll to wound. With bs 4 and strength 5, that's like almost an 80% success rate for causing wounds on marines and almost 87% against toughness 3 stuff. With 6 shots, you're talking about almost 5 wounds each turn! Granted, you have to be in range. Since I usually spend the first turns shooting at vehicles, I don't really use the devourer till turn 3-4 and am usually in range then.Originally Posted by Sandro17
The barbed stragler with venom cannon doesn't make much sense if you are going to be shooting at vehicles. Its much better to take the barbed with devourer that way and dedicate it to pure anti-infantry. While I like the BS, its unlikely to cause more than 5 wounds at strength 5 as compared with the devourer. However, on the carni it makes sense cause of the amazing strength 8 against vehicles and also higher chance of wounding with worse chance of hitting. If you play against a lot of horde armies, the barbed straggler/tl devouer tyrant could be deadly....
I have tried the elite carnifex with 2 TL-Devourers in an anti-skimmer role. The range of 18 is such a problem. I've had games where I couldn't get a shot until turn 3. The venom tyrant allows you to start stunning vehicles right away. The 2 TL-devourer carni is still sweet, just not necessarily in an anti-tank role. The best target for him seems to be assault cannon dreadnoughts who love to get close as well. Venom cannon tyrant and vc/bs carni make a credible threat against falcons, hammerheads, and predators (ranged tanks with high armor). These simply can't be targeted well by devourer carnis or zoas. Light skimmers such as vypers and raiders/ravagers may also outrange this carni and with their high movements be hard to catch up with.
As for your tyrant guard, I don't think its necessary to take 3 of them. Tyrant guard are meant to be a deterrence, not an absolute defense. In essence, you spent 135 pts on defensive wargear for your tyrant...seems a bit much. One or two are usually enough to make opponent think twice or have to dedicate massive firepower. Plus tyrant guard/tyrant won't be getting in hth so tyrant guard's lack of guns means its just filler. Also hurts in escalation having all those pts tied down into a unit. Don't know why tyrant guard don't have guns like in 3rd, at least spinefists as old. They are as big if not bigger than warriors, guess they are too dumb or its wasteful to give your to-be-sacrificed beast guns....
