Welcome to Librarium Online!
i'm mulling over a strike force list and i can't decide whether to use the spear of khaine or maugan ra in the webway. if i was to use the phoenix lord, i'd attach him to a storm squad with enhance to get WS7 I8. with the executioner and crushing blow that also makes him S7. a formidable opponent for anyone. and he would be around 70 points cheaper than the spear.
the spear of khaine, on the other hand, will give fearless to most of my other units coming out of the gate. With 2 witchblades and the wailing doom they will be able to down most monstrous creatures and dreadnaughts that might have strayed close.
anyone want to try and persuade me otherwise?
Both are also awsome models (avatar and Ra then). I would try both since they fit some nice tactics.
ra plus 16 man storm squad out of the webway gate is pretty savage. think i'll go with the to start.
I believe Phoenix lords are str4 base so that would with an executioner and crushing blow make maugan str 9. (Correct me if i'm wrong).
Now, as you probably know, the shuriken cannon is not a particularly useful weapon but, you have hit on a really good use for maugan and it is one that I will be exploiting in the future.
FOUR WS7 I8 Str9 attcks on the charge??!!
Hit a C'tan on 3+ wound on 3+ he has to invul save on a 4+? And what's that? You have a fearless meatshield of 20 guardians that it will take him on average 5 turns to kill off? Bye bye C'tan.
You are going to seriously worry some C'tan that's all I can say. :shifty: In addition, the addition of as many as 20 fearless storm guardians and a warlock is enough to give anyone the shivers. Go with maugan. The spear's good, and probably better for overall army morale and against vehicles, but you just created a monster. :w00t:
Ra is only strength 7 with executioner and crushing blow. Dunno where 9 came from :/
Anyways he only makes a unit fearles if he is leading his own aspect. As we know Reapers don't excel in the combat department. Unless rules have changed if a fearless character leads a not fearless unit they will still have to run away and keep running until the unit has regrouped. Personally if you use him I'd put him with banshees. Both can fleet of foot so the speed they can move is trenendous.
Oh Ra can't use gaurdians as meat sheild in combat. You have to target either the squad or the independant character, which means he can get picked off.
The avatar is very good for its points, especially with the host of warlocks. They sometimes may not make it into combat the turn they get out of the gate but get the seer-council to send a fortune over in their direction and there you have it....a bloody tough unit who can give a good whopping. You can probably get 2 warlocks + avatar for the points of Ra. If you max out the squad IMO it's better than the special character.
Take the Spear of Khaine, remember the tactical withdrawal rule? Now you can forget it. The Avatar makes all your units within 12" fearless in close combat, and he is better than Maugan Ra in CC. Disadvantages is that he is slower since he can't fleet, but I think SoK is more worth it in the end.
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
the squad as a whole would probably perform better, but with ra i can take more guardians. WS5 I5 guardians with 2 attacks are pretty cool. and i've set up my council to be pretty combat based.
the only reason i'd join him to a guardian unit would be the extra WS and I. if i were to take karandas, that 16man storm squad has 64 attacks on the charge along with 7 S5 attacks from the lord himself. but i need opponent's permission and there's no scorpions in my list, which is a bit beardy.
and no, he can't use the guardians as a meatshield. but the opponent has to either hit ra or deal with my standard squad who, even when charged, are generally going first and having 32 attacks hitting on 3s. i'll hit that many that rolling 5s and 6s to wound really doesn't bother me.
i could always attach him to the council when he gets out of the gate
Sorry abot the 9 thing, I didn't have my codex in front of me and thought for one weird moment that an executioner doubles strength. Woops. And I crapped out on the meat sheild thing too. Its really not my day.Grumble moan whine etc etc.
