From what i have heard previously I think they were meant as Sm shredders or something to counter them or maybe to add and deversify the fast attack slot for the tau
yes stingwings are suposed to be SM killers.

Is what I am trying to understand is how are they going to be useful after a deep strike. They are no where as tough to kill as terminators squad and will most likely be wiped out the next turn. I donâ€™t have a dex but I think I have heard there point cost and it would be a big waist of points to have them wiped out for just one barrage with only half or less wounding. Maybe I am missing something here? Can someone explain?
They're really fast with AP3 weapons... ideal for killing Devastator squads.
That and, if memory serves they have a variation of fleet of foot and are jump troops. (And coming in at I5 as well...)

possibly a way to blast an advancing assault squad with the support of a Fire Warrior squad. just sit em in cover and when they come close, pop 'em!
I also considered the uses of this unit when I first heard of it and still believe they are not one of the better units available to tau. Like how necron players rarely use wraiths/ pariahs.
they are extremly risky to use but they could be very beneficial for a static tau army as a counterstrike->assault unit.
but sending them ahead to snipe at devis? not a chance unless you DS because bolters will tear you to shreds. And then they will die because on average a squad of 10 takes down 3-4 marines....thats not going to be enough to stop the amount of bolters now pointed at you. (what else do the tactical marines shoot? your firewarriors may be too far away and everything else gets a good save from the shells....so byebye vespids)

Wo says we have to march them in plain sight of the rest of your army?
Plus, while we may kill at most 5, I think your forgetting about assault......
Plus, I wouldn't DS them, they are just too vulnerable.
But if you stick them with a mounted FW squad, what would you find more threating? Plus what if you combine them with Crisis Suits? thats alot of AP 2 and 3 weapons there....
I feel they will be a good unit that takes intelligence to use to thier full effectiveness.
