Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've been thinking about the HS slots in my Ulthwe army (because I'm a touch obsessive like that) which currently are a pair of Falcons and a Wraithlord. Honestly, I'm not sure if the Falcons fit in well. I like them and they have the very distinct advantage of already being owned, but I wonder if Wraithlords might function better.
Falcons dish out considerably more firepower, they move an extra 6", and they can transport units. All of these are nice, however they do cost an extra 80 points and when it comes right down to it, I don't really view the transport option as a benefit so much as an obligation.
The Wraithlord comes in at a nice tight 120 points, has about half as much firepower as the Falcon, but it does pack a punch in CC which is fairly handy for me as I'm not fielding much that's really good in CC outside of my Seer Council.
What I really can't tell is which one is going to reliably be more durable in a game. I can run numbers just as well as the next guy, but I'd like to hear the experiences people have had with the two in games to get a bit of an empirical view of the two. Feel free to leave all considerations of cheese inside the fridge, or on a cracker, where they belong. (That gives be a good idea for basing some minis though...)
As a bit of a tag-on question... do the Eldar titans from GW's Epic line match Wraithlords more or less in size? I'm balking at picking up models that may be out of date in a year, which may end up trumping any tactical considerations in the end.
You play your game, I'll play mine.
Each have their place. Falcons with a min'ed squad of double flamer guardians makes them perfect for anti horde, and capable of killing their points in marine in one shot. The falcon, once it gets moving, are rock hard to kill. Can't be mine war'ed, doesn't worry about getting locked in combat.
Wls, cheaper, draw huge amounts of fire, rock hard, will draw unhappy scowls from people that don't know how to beat eldar.
16,000+ of Eldar (only need flyers)
7,000+ of Nids (want heirophant)
6,000+ of Space Marines (need rever titan)
4,400+ of Cygnar (all models for the faction)
1,500+ of Legion (just started)
Falcons are in my opinion more useful, they don't have 6" more movement they have 18" more movement. Sure they can't shoot if you move so far, but you can threaten enemy units, claim objectives or block passages easily. Wraithlords are good at protecting your Guardians and carrying Bright lances, but the Falcon can do a lot more stuff.
And when it comes to durability, the Falcon is tougher. Though a bit less reliant; it can be killed with one shot if lucky while the Wraithlord will need all three wounds to be taken down. However, it is much easier to remove a wound from a Wraithlord in the first place than it is to take down a Falcon.
Go Falcon! :w00t:
Warhammer Fantasy: Warriors of Chaos, High Elves
Warhammer 40k: Eldar, Space Marines, Orks
i agree falcons much harder to kill than wrathlords, hower the wrathlords are very cheap and sturdy cannon fodder. but a moving 12" falcom with holo field indistructable-nearly.
It also depends on the type of army you are playing. If you have lots of speed, go with the Falcon of course but if you are footslogging it or are entrenched, then the Wraithlord lends much needed support in close combat.
