Do rippers just move 6 inches and assault 6 inches? That all I can tell.

Yes that exactly right. You can buy them wings or leaping to change it.
Unless the rules for a unit specify a different movement mode (jump packs, wings, leaping, beast, jetbike, etc), always assume that it moves and assaults 6".
Why do the survivors remain anonymous -- as if cursed -- while the dead are revered? Why do we cling to what we lose while we ignore what we still hold?
Name none of the fallen, for they stood in our place, and stand there still in each moment of our lives.

Yes rippers only move and assault 6. You can change this by buying them either wings or leaping but they can't have both and winged ones aren't allowed extended carapace. They do get the tyranid rules for moving through cover if thats any consolation in trying to speed them up. Ripper jacks from necromunda can make good winged rippers or try to convert your own. I am trying I stress trying to do it with adrenal glands a single cord of a warriors flesh hook attached to each as a tail with 2 left arm devourer thumbs for fangs and little wee wings made from paper hardened with PVA. I'm not sure how to do leaping ones. Standard rippers look like they are leaping but they're just meant to be standard and aren't leaping.
