A friend of mine has just stated play SM and has been beating me silly with I play the KoS and was wondering if some people could tell me ways to get the upper hand on the SM.
KoS tends to own space marines. It all comes down to deployment. Basically if he deploys all the way forward your in range for a first turn charge, with a Waagh roll you should be equal initiative, and you should have a nob with a power klaw and boy with a burna. Playing KoS your really going for all or nothing, you need the guts to get in there on first turn and get it done right. Storm boys with zagstrukk always help too

Well it depends almost entirely on your list, which would be great if you could provide for us.
As for general tactics, space marines squads are very durable, point for point or otherwise, and a Speed Freek player who isgetting bogged down in combat for more than a turn or two is a Speed Freek player who is probably losing. To get past this, send multiple trukk boy units / biker units to attack a single unit, to make sure you can either destroy it, or ensure victory next turn so you can consolidate and move on without suffering too many casualties.
Use distractions, such as warbuggies, to take the heat off of the charge for your trukk boys or battle wagons, and make SURE you always have your important vehicles fully secured behind solid terrain. Its better to move two thirds of your max speed and be safe then to roar up 24+ inches and get blown to bits because you are out in the middle of a field.
Don't tool up individual units too much. Make many smaller targets (don't load up too much gear on nobs, boss with a retinue is too much of a point sink, warbikes are super expensive, etc...) because everything is easy to kill, so a 600 point battlewagon including a warboss with a decked out retinue is still going to die pretty quickly to light to medium anti armour fire.
In objective based games (take and hold, recon, table quarters, etc..) use your speed to your advantage. You don't have to fight that much to win. Being one of the fastest armies, if not THE fastest army, you should be able to secure vital positions quickly and give yourself a good charge perimeter that will make the enemy sorry if they come within it.
Also, unless you HAVE to, or it would be easy to do so, avoid fighting HUGE jacked up retinues, or dreadnoughts. Unless a tooled up retinue is in jump packs or in a transport, they can be avoided, leaving them a huge point sink. If you have to fight them, pile as many boys and nobs with claws in on them as possible, or even better, blow up their transport and then assault them.
Last and definitely not least, power claws. Period. If you aren't using power claws on almost every single nob possible, you are a fool. Those ninnies thats say "hey powerclaws may be OKAY and kill lots of stuff and always earn their points back... id rather have a choppa and strike at initiative 6! lawl! omg!" are not correct. A) in speed freaks you are not guaranteed to even get the waaagh test, so the power claw doesnt suffer at all from that. Even against non 3+ armies, the power claw has a lot higher kill ratio than choppas, and will usually earn their points back against them. Against 3+ armies (necrons, marines, chaos, etc) they will earn back so many points its ridiculous, unless, of course, you don't use them properly or let it get blown to pieces by anti infantry fire.
That is all I can give for general speed freak help, I could give you better help but Id need your army list first.

use many buggies with twin linked rokkits. also, give boyz in trukks rokkits. they will pierce sm armour, and do much damage to his tanks. too bad they got rid of 2nd edition vehicle ramming.
