Welcome to Librarium Online!
I think we all here realise how vital it is to make sure that our troops don't run off the table, but which method do you use and why? At the moment I'm considering Shas'uis in my FW teams and an Ethereal. Re roll Ld 8 has a tiny odd of failing - probably about as good as Ld 10!
What do you chaps use?
Bonding the only Ethereal I have ever used is Aun'shi....
Problem is, cause of modifiers, you are not always gonna get that Ld 8. Still, its better than Ld 7....Re roll Ld 8 has a tiny odd of failing - probably about as good as Ld 10!
To answer your question, when I can afford it (in points), I use both. If not, I use bonding.
Bonding is definitely the way to go. Something about 3 Basalisks killing your Etheral in the first turn and cauing 50% of your army to flee is not a good thing..
Mooing peacefully since 1996!

i don't bother with either except for on my battlesuits. if my FW's lose a CC they're as good as dead anyway IMO and its not worth the points and they very rarely lose a fire fight
less hate more kittens
I would have to go with the ethereal, because he is cheaper than bonding a mass amount of firewarriors and any suits. If you go this way, I would keep him very close to units, don't make him join though, and then just keep him hidden within your mass load of troops so any indirect fire or whatever has a hard time of destroying him because he is independant. I know that it is a big risk to have all your forces running off the board, but like anything, if you play it smart you can save some points for more squads or whatever. For small points game I still think the ethereal is better because you can choose to have your units to run away or stay, and most of the time it happens your way. You can even prevent your units from ever having to be under 50%. Being able to control you troops with the ethereal, I think is the way to go. I hope this helps
Myself I go for the Ethereal - he seems a far better buy than the chance to rally squads under 50%.
Both when I take an Aun. If I use many 6 man teams, then and only then I don't bond.
It needs to be clear that bonding and ethereals do not provide the same benefits. They have funtions that compliment each other and overlap, but it is comparing two different purposes. I did a more detailed comparison on "Total Tau" about a month back.
Ethereals increase leadership to 10 only to a squad they have joined. Not bad. They also allow every unit (except drones and Kroot) to re-roll all leadership/morale checks. Okay, so they don't increase leadership for everyone.
Bonding. Does not increase leadership at all. Doesn't allow you to re-roll failed leadership checks. It only allows you to have a chance to regroup AFTER a failed leadership check when below half unit strength. That's it. If you didn't bond and failed the initial leadership test after falling below half strength, then your unit will fall back and leave the table. The ethereal would let you re-roll that initial failure, but if you failed again they are forever broken.
Shas'ui. Simply increases leadership to 8 for a unit that takes one. That's it, except for allowing the shas'ui to take one piece of wargear.
Different effects that can all be complimentary. You may even choose all three. If I take an ethereal I still bond, but then I rarely take a shas'ui with fire warriors.
Hey Tau of your your a member of total tau same here
No getting bak to the topic it all depends on how many points and what game
I'm not sure but your post prolly counts as copyright, so you should prolly take it off untill you ask a Mod about it, just a thought.....
Does anyone not use either?
