Welcome to Librarium Online!
it's time for the brood to expand! currently, i'm working on the original starter box for the tyranids (3 warriors, 12 genestealers, 16 hormanogaunts, 16 gaunts) + a lictor, a zanthrope and a biovore.
i'm looking at using my genestealers with a broodlord, to act as a scout group - i tend to play sm and the power armour is killing me. the broodlord's power weapon-like arms would suit that purpose. to balance the hth i'm thinking of a shooty carnifex or hive tyrand.
i'll prolly need to build up the broods as well (so much to do!)
my question is what are people's opinions on the brood lords, and which is a better shooty choice? carnifex or hivetyrant?
I personally like the broodlord... however i find with the genestealers rending he sometimes doesnt see enough combat to justify the points... infiltrate is nice but losing FoC isnt. I find that for the points an extra few genestealers (And maybe give yours scuttling) is better.
As for the Hive Tyrant/Gunfex dilemma i find that a Vc/Bs 'Fex is better than the Tyrant alternative. But a Dakka Tyrant (2 Tl Devourers, toxin sacs, wings, etc) is better than the Dakka fex due to wings.
Id reccomend proxying the broodlord and trying it... if you dont like him then dont buy him... simple.
Hope this helps.

For the ponits it costs it's a great unit, very powerfull and can tackle just about any character that get's in it's way.
I've seen mine goes through HQ's like a hot knife through butter and with a nice genestealer retinue there's little that can stop it.
For a good firepower unti it really depends what sort of firepower you mean, long range or short range, 1 power shot or multiple weaker shots.
dakka tyrants sometimes fail against space marines. i tried it twice against a blood angels army. it cannot harm dreadnaugts, vehicles, (until it gets to cc, where it has lost two attacks because of weapon choice.) and once, he had a 6 man marine squad, and each turn it killed two marines, lascannon armed man shooting three times. tough my tyrant did not have wings, maybe if i could charge them it would be different. And in the second game i did just that, then it became the first priority target for him, both expensive, a source of synapse, and deadly both in shooting and cc. the result was 8 assault cannon shots, twin linked lascannon from a vehicle and 2 lascannon shots from troops. it also did nothing to death company. it only -surprisingly- killed 3 terminators once.
tough you will have the same problem with shooty fexes, (goddamn marine armor) they make you ready for nasty armor units such as vehicles, dreadnaughts and in bunkers in some situations.
broodlord is fine. but it has some problems also.
sometimes the mission does not let you and then you cannot infiltrate. and there is long way between the enemy and you. good luck without fleet.
even when it infiltrates, it generally takes 2 or sometimes 3 rounds before it can assault. until that time it and its company are fire magnets.
if you take few genestealers with him, they die quickly and bl is open early. and there will be few rending attacks form genes. but if you take too much, you cannot hide effectively out of sight and you may have to place at 18".
if you use broodlord, i suggest to give it and genes with him flesh hooks. this helps you hide behind walls and alike, and then almost ignore the wall when needed.
good luck. space marines are deadly against us with all that assault cannon. a weapon shouldnt be good against both troops and monstrous creatures.
Cant really comment on the fex vs tyrant issue because I dont really use either of them, I tend to use lots of fast moving stealers and gargoyles. The Broodlord on the other hand....
Flesh hooks, toxin sacs and implant attack, combine this with a stealer retinue and they will go through hq's and elites with no problem. Ive taken out an avatar followed by a wraithlord within two turns
