How would I have to use my swarm army agaisnt a tau army. What type of carnifexs or other heavy, hq, or elites creature should i use in my army to deal with a tau army. I don't know how to approach a tau army because they have VERY good ranged weapons and annoying heavy weapons, plus they have kroot carnivores and I heard they are good.
They do have very good weapons however kroot aren't the scariest thing on the planet feel free to charge them though try and avoid charging them in forests if possible but if you do not the end of the world.
They have some hefty Pie Plates so keep your units spread to eliminate unecessary losses. Have a couple of lictors engage them in CC to cause LOS obstacles for his shooting while your fast units rush up to get in CC
Carni's should be VC armed to disable the Hammer heads and eliminate the Pie Plate Heavy ordanance destruction of your broods.
suits need to be engaged with a flying hive tyrant or infiltrating Broodlord squad or lictors i.e. rending or something that ignores saves.

Yeah, I find hormagaunts behind other things like termagants and lictors (multiple) are effective against Tau.
As much as they have very good guns, they can't really see very well down the scopes... so don't expect to get hit all the time.
markerlights... serious problem. i haven't yet played against tau but i have a game next week. maybe some regeneration on carnifexes... and warp field on tyrants. lictors is a must. it can lock down some serious problems.low ws means it may even survive for a few rounds, and maybe even success massacre. i also think of gargoyles. they are amazing fast, will do the trick even with low numbers (bio plasma) and will be better than hormagaunts if there are no synapses left. i would advice one winged tyrant and another tyrant with 2 guards. keep your monstrous creatures in cover, and dont forget about mission spesific rules. good luck for both of us and "for the greater food"
Here is one thing I may add. Crisis suits are one of the nids more deadly elites so watch out for them. Occationally you will see a squad deep strike around the place so to surprise attack valuable units. If you take the carnifexs and keep them in the back to shoot down the hammer heads then I would suggest you keep them close together and keep a Zoanthrope or 2 near by. This will get you some AP3 and 2 shots at any deepstriking crisis.
Also, dont worry about kroot. I once assaulted them out fo cover with 20-30 guardsmen Str. 3 T3 vs 20 kroot Str. 4 T4 or 3 i dont remember. Well the thing is ...I beat down those kroot. If you didnt already know unless they have a sharper they dont have any armor saves. If they do its only a 6.
One last thing...be sure to keep your gaunts spaces. The railguns submission shot is dangerous (ordnance template).
Hope I helped
Taus are a solid army, i played against them a lot, and it was always really hard.
Basically, once you have beaten the crisis and hammerheads, the tau player is easy meat.
the way to go against taus for me are:
Carnis with VC abd BS, to get those annoying hammerheads.
Zoan aren't really good, since slow and low range: crisis and hammerhead can manage to stay out of their range.
A bunch of hormagaunts and spinegaunts. with no improvment. Taus are bad at CC, no need to boost your troops, we need number, not quality. get a strong synapse for them (maybe zoan)
Lictors works fine againts taus, often able to catch and destroy crisis suits.
Maybe biovores could be usefull too, i never used them. Taus players useo hate indirect fire weapons, since they can harm their precious: crisis suits.
Yes, biovores can really make the day for a nid player vs tau, I've played them several times now, and they've dun so much more then could be asked of such a beasty dude.
And a lot of BIG nid's make up for a tough game, infiltraating BLord with retineu. And devourer fexes hurta lot as well, with a bit of luck, the biovores can stun/shaden the heads for a while till you can reach it with other stuff, the str 6 devourer fexes are a pain in the as vs the side and rear of the heads due to the ammount of shots.
And get one unit into cc with the tau, and you still eat him even if it's your only unit left. Just make sure you have a couple of fast stuff in the list to tie him up and get something more nasty in cc so they can finish it.
If you really wanna try sumting fun, try and outshoot them by using devourer fexes, tyrant and biovores, I've played it once and it's really fun to play though very hard, cuz you HAVE to choose the right targets to be able to outshoot him, but again, VERY fun.
'Thou shalt not refer to the Adeptus Soritas as "Bolter Bitches" nor shalt thou go anywhere near our sisters during the time of the "Red Rage," lest thou wishes to be the first human to enter orbit without the aid of a shuttle.'
The trick to Tau is to keep alot of fireing pressure on their hammerheads to keep them shaken / worse and then try and close them down as quickly u can. Their troops are fairly weak so no need for stealers, horms will do u well.
There are some awesome battle reports by badmovies.org with him playing tau.

"They are coming! I feel them scratching inside my mind, scratching, screaming, running, so many - so, so many voices. They're coming for us - flesh, body and soul!"
So I got the point that lictors and the broodlord are very good against tau, but how many lictors should I take. Should i take 2 broods of leaping warriors, two broods of winged warriors and 1 lictor or do i need more lictors and less warriors. What kind of and how many fexs should i take? I going to take a Gunfex but is a dakka fex even worth it because of the tau's range. What other types should i take for a fex?
Because of the unreliability of both the lictor in turns of reserve roll and the Carni with there BS you should take at least 2 of these if you wanna get some sort of guarentee. I personally would use all 3 lictors against tau and probably 2 gunfexs however this does tie up a significant ammount of points but i feel lictors and more important than gunfex's if you hafta make a call.Originally Posted by hapa9999
