i dont see how fireknife is better than TL Plasmas all around?
is this solely to give the crisis flexibility to take out armor? (w the Fusion Blaster?)
seems to me TL rapid fire PLs is far better given the reroll
but hey im new...
1 Shas'ui Team Leader with missile pod, plasma rifle, multi-tracker and hardwired drone controller with 2 gun drones,
2 Shas'ui with missile pod, plasma rifle and multi-tracker, Bonded....but any suit using a missile pod, plasma rifle and multi-tracker is considered a "FireKnife" setup. This configuration is mainly used for popping Marines and Light Armor.

I wouldn't say it is better, but it has applications in some non-marine uses. It can pop weak armor or back armor. On top of that, with 7 S you have a better chance of wounding high toughness units. For example, if a chaos bike were to turbo boost towards you, it would have toughness 5 and an invulnerable save. A plasma wounds on a 3+, missle pod on a two. The missle pod also lends a bit of extra range, which can be useful.
Against standard footslogging or jetpacking marine equivalents with light armor, TL plasma really is the better choice. Your heavy support can easily handle the armor, and the plasma roasts T4 3+ saves more efficently.
Wraithlords are another example, although the missle doesn't pierce their save it gives you range and a better chance of wounding.

Ask yourself why in the world would you trust a win loss record? Playing them yourself is the only way to tell.
The true joy in the game is playing down to the last model, no matter the odds.
Personally, I don't care for the Fireknife setup. I have some suits with just missile pods, some suits with just plasma rifles. I don't like mixing purposes in a unit- probably comes from when I played Eldar.
I don't know if it's better than some other configurations. But it is a great combo when you're just starting out in the game and need to get a feel of what different weapons do in different situations.
It is nice, however to have weapons that compliment each other. The missile pod and plasma do, but a missile pod and flamer don't. Gun drones don't really fit with the fireknife setup either.
I really think that there isn't a 'best' configuration. There are so many different situations, target types, and tactics that people use and run into that the only good way to tell what works for you is to try to use them all, or almost all, and decide what works best for yourself.
I personally don't use fireknife, except on my commander. Otherwise I use TL missile pods or plasma, fusion combo. Some people might scoff at this setup, but it works for me.
You need to play a bunch and find out for yourself which is better, for you.
I find the XV8 really performs better when it has low AP high strength weapons, I like the helios or twin fusion set ups, the helios (fu / pl / multi) is quite awesome when put on to a commander (EL or O) simply because at 12" it hits and wounds 90% of models on 2+ (3+ hit for EL) with 3 shots and unless an inv save is available the model hit is dead.Originally Posted by turinevo
It also performs admirably against armour it can take out AV14 with the fusion and if it gets to rear armour the plasma's 2 shots are effective.
As for the fireknife popping marines well you can kill two if your within 12" with the plasma but the missile pod struggles because it offers a save and I prefer the AP of the one fusion shot as I feel its more guaranteed to kill.
The sheer versitality of the Helios swings it for me, that AP4 of the missile pod simply gives to many models a save but lots of people like it mainly I think its because its a safe unit to use, the helios needs to be used skilfully as you cannot rely on range but when it is used well it reaps dividends
whats the helios?
but I take the fireknife because I play against BT, deamonhunters, hoarde nids, and super pumped up nids. the fireknife give lots of shots that totally ownes everhbody in these categories. i just have 2 or 3 fireknife teams pop up and anhilliate one squad at a time.-
i need to find something interesting to put here

don't belive they have updated with the new codex yet.
i play against nids and guard, so i don't really have to worry about armor or smurfs.
I think fireknife is the most useful configuration... my personal setup is helios on commanders and fireknife on everyone else, and I'd like to try flamers + burst canons, neither of which I've used harly at all...

I like the plasma + fusion combo. Sure it won't kill in mass but thats why you get hammerheads and troops in to support. But it will make short work of marines, necrons, nids, wraithlords, and vehicles.
If at first you dont succeed, skydiving is not for you.
The Fireknife set up give you great vesatility, which is why people like it a lot when going into tourneys where they aren't sure of the opponents. Enough shots and range to hurt GEQ units, but the power to hurt MEQ units. I also like the Burst Cannon/Missile Pod/Multi-Tracker set up, for lots of shots.
However, for GEQ, my favorite set up is my commander.
AFP, CIB, Shield Generator, HW-Multi-Tracker, Irridium Armor, Stimulant Injector. Anything within 18" with a 5+ save will be handily shredded, and it has the armor to withstand a lot of hits.
