Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi, im new to 40K, I have a few Imperial Guard models but im really interested in the Tau. Mostly by the models themselves since I haven't seen their rules. I been playing Fantasy battles since forever so im not a noob to warhammer completely. Anyways, I would like help on building a starter army, hopefully one that can beat Orks but any tips will help. Cheers.
first saw the title of the thread i thought "buy a hammerhead"
tau is really shooty. we absolutely suck in assault.
vs ork you will want to be very mobile so you can get away from them as quickly as possible.
I personally like mech tau(mobile tau).
IMO a good starter would be
1 commander suit
4 crisis suits
2 hammer heads
if you are going up against meqs
i haven't tried using the skyray yet.
your going up against mainly orks then i would suggest
say three sqauds of 12. Orks die in droves to S5 AP5 shots. Id also suggest stealth teams for their burst cannons. A crisis team with plasma rifles and missile pods to take out Nobs and Mega Armoured nobs. Also a hammerhead
WELL SAID, NO MORE SQUATS THEY ARE DEAD GET OVER ITOriginally Posted by artificer
What type of orks? If it is speed freaks or buggy/battlewagon heavy, then mechanized Tau should do well against them. If it is footslogging, static Tau is brutal for an ork player.
A hammerhead is also a good way to start off; they give excellent anti-tank and anti-horde abilities and do not cost many points. They are a good way to fill your heavy support/anti-tank needs. Firewarriors are great to buy, especially against orks (you can pop killer kans!!). Kroot is the only other troop choice, and it depends on your playing style whether or not they will be effective.
he has a mix of fast attack and troops. nothing heavy, elite stuff too. fast stuff is mix wagons and bikes, troops, well he has loads. elite he has snipers and thats all i know. i haven't seen much else but i never battles him b4.
cheers again for help
Personally, I'd go for static. You should be able to get in a round of shooting since he can't scream all the way across the board turn 1 and get you in CC. Not having to buy a transport, you can afford a lot more pulse weaponry which will shred both his boyz and his trukkz. A hammerhead is always a good bet, since he might grab a battlewagon, but in case he doesn't, it can always throw down pieplates. It is a 1-turn gamble; can you kill everything in 1 turn?
I'm sure it would be a lot more tactically sound to use mechanized Tau, but I have never found mech Tau that threatening (eldar is the nastiest mechanized force there can be). FoF all over the place, pieplate with hammerhead, stealth suit barrage, etc. would work quite well against Orks.
You might try throwing O'Shovah in there; getting Preferred Enemy: Ork would be fun, though it costs you critical heavy support choices (though, you might not need that many railguns against Orks...). Plus O'Shovah charging a Warboss would be fun to watch (O'Shovah goes first, as long as Warboss doesn't go Waaaaaaaaaaaagh!!!).
If I was starting from scratch right now, I would get 2 of the new Battleforce boxes and 1-2 Hammerheads, depending on budget. The Tau Battleforce is a tremendous bargain, moreso if you get it at discount online.
