What do people reckon the best C'tan killing unit in the eldar army to be? At present, I like a Seer council of reasonable size with fortune and plenty of witchblades.
Eldrad is the greatest among us, he is the sun which eclipses the light of our stars.
He is Ulthwe.
Forelli's gonna get ya!
The C'tan is one impressive being. Personally I think the best way to take him out is do it at range. Get as many Str. 9 and 10 shots at him as possible. The next best Idea is to get 2 or 3 wraithlords with brightlances and just go straigh for him. Hopefully you can take him down a wound or two before you get in CC, although be aware that you may lose a wraith lord in the proccess as his attacks ignore all saves and are at Str. 10. Even so with you outnumbering him you should have a decent chance and its worth the risk. He cost 360 freaking point for crying out loud. Hope this helps as im not an eldar player but I do have my own Nightbringer.
Shooting from a couple of Wraithguard units would be a fair bet. Essentially their weapons lose their instant kill, but become rending. Their BS is high enough to guarantee a few wounds, and they will still be hitting on 3+ and wounding on 4+ with no armour saves allowed, even if they don't instant kill on a 6. A squad of 10 or two of 5 should mince a C'tan in a round of shooting. If enhanced, in close combat they will be able to wound him too, and with their warlock tooled up with a witchblade, he should add a few wounds to the mix.
Trick is, I think you need things at S5+ to wound the C'tan (I think it's tougness , of which there are relatively few in the Eldar List, aside from our heavy weapons. Another safe bet would be Rangers. Small squads, and lots of them, as they wound on 4s irrespective of toughness - fantastic.
Another option is lots of massed fire from Dark Reapers. They may not wound very well against C'tan, but they get lots of shots at high BS. Or there's the combo of 3 starcannon warwalkers, with guide. Watch him get melted.

i just either send my council at it ( wounding on 2+) or use rangers
Yes, Rangers are a good bet against /any/ monstrous creature. You'll hit it as well as any Exarch would, and you'll wound it as well as any S8 weapon would in close combat. I don't think C'tan have armour saves, but if they did, 1/6 of your shots would also ignore it. Rangers are also /much/ cheaper than either a Seer Council or a decent sized squad of Wraithguard (or two). A WL costs about the same as 6 Rangers, but I don't think it would be as effective.
I always liked rangers for this task, although with my Saim Hann it has never been a problem (watch the C'Tan chase vypers with 6 str6 shots round the field - the necron player I regularly play gave up after the first game)
Everything you have been told is a lie!
That would be a good laugh! Seriously though, I find alot of the more slated units are incredibly useful - I would sooner take my Avatar to the table than I would my Wraithlord, for example - the ability to make your otherwise fear-susceptible troops immune to fear is fantastic. I had a group of 20 guardians getting merrily massacred by a Necron Lord and his Pariahs (all with warscythes) for 3 turns and they never batted an eye. You can keep your WL!
Recently, I had 6 rangers (2 squads of 3) kill a Daemon Prince in 3 turns before he even got close to CC. Combined with a good Starcannon, they can /shred/ Terminator Squads, (a 2+ armour save is going to fail at least one of the 5 hits I land each turn - and that's assuming none of them hit on a 6!) and I've even had Space Marines being pinned before now. Their ability to sit in heavy cover with a 2+ save should also be used to your advantage - if you're pressing home with CC elsewhere, they wont have time to send anything to chase your little 3 man ranger squads, and they'll have to think twice about exposing side armour on their vehicles if you position them right
Errr...no. The instant kill rule of the wraithcannon against c'tan only means they lose their inv. save against that wound. It's nothing like rending...(and against the other wounds it has a save).Originally Posted by Alexb83
In the face of a C'Tan, just phase the necrons out and ignore the big guy. C'Tan are slow and expensive. If it gets close, slap him with a witch blade or 6.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
I say avoid it or use guns since they cost 360pts thats 20necrons! so there number will be small or send your council at it
Throwing a seer council up against a C'tan is suicide, they would still maul them nicely.
Rangers are your best bet if you want to shoot them (since C'tan would nicely own wraithlord).
