Welcome to Librarium Online!
Now, we all know that balanced lists are almost always the most effective, however, having 9 broadsides seems extremely cool to me. I mean, 9 twinlinked railcannons? vehicles would of course be dead after the first round of shooting, but after that, is it plausible? has anyone ever done this? i'd like to hear how they performed.
If you're not worried about the points cost (which is enourmous), it actually is fairly effective for using against terminators and other tough nuts to crack. As all of these things get killed, other units in an opponent's army tend to avoid the fire arcs of these monsters. Anyway you use them, they are a serious thorn in an opponent's side.

Imagine what you'll know tomorrow
Not verry good against swarm-armies....if you meet someone ith just one tank and rest infantry you'll be sure to take the tank out, but the rest of the army? It's not very efficient!
Imagine being in a turny and the guy sits down with a grin on his face, he pulls out 3 monoliths... I WISH i could just see the panic in his eyes when you pop out your 9 BS. But other then that, its really army specific...
tanks = dead
swarms = not
Tau'cena Intercept Legion W2-L4-D2
as the rest said, it is devastating against tanks and termie's .
but swarmes.. okay the smart missle system can blast holes in the enemy (9x 4 is a lot of shots) but you won't make it.
maybe if you support them with a lot of fire warriors against any swarms it MIGHT work.
hope it helps
All marine units in my area either have a lascannon and plasmagun, or a dude with a powerfist. All eldar armies have lots of starcannons and bright lances. Even if you had 2 shield drones with the 3 broadsides, there's still too much risk in failing a moral test and running off the board.

9 Broadsides kitted out the way I like them (2 shield drones apiece, leader has HW target lock, bonded) would cost close to 1,000 points, and you have very limited anti-infantry. However, it would dominate at my store, where no one plays swarm, except for a few genestealer-hordes.Originally Posted by elfwarden
It would be quite funny to fit that in 1500 points...
To get 9 Broadsides you need to have 3 teams of 3 and this is were the major weakness of 9 BS comes from.Originally Posted by elfwarden
BS's even with the slow and purposeful are essentialy a static unit they have no real chance of avioding any fast unit, and this is known by most good opponents and they will be cahsed down fast (in fact even normal movement units can catch them quite fast), now yes they have a 2+ save and are not bad (not brilliant either) in CC but they are only TGH4 and have the same crap WS and INT as all Tau, so a unit caught by an assault unit with a couple of power weapons / power fists etc are going to recieve some serious damage and more than likely get sweeping advanced to death (because BS int is so poor), you can lose a whole team very quickly, and you have lost a third of that firepower, also any team even held in CC is not shooting, so get a low value unit in CC with em and they are redundant for a whole chunk of the game.
Also as Oni pointed out they are so vulnerable to high strength weapons or mid strength high volume weaponry, even shield drones dont work, if you hit a unit with enough shots the BS are going to get hit despite having shield drones (and at 30 pts for 2 its way to expensive). Starcannons and brightlances really hurt suits and BS dont even have the benefit of mobility (JSJ) to avoid the shots, Lascannons are deadly at BS4 and wounding on 2+ even with a shield drone/Shield Gen the BS is going to go down fast.
If you lose one suit your testing for 25% losses and even drones (say 2-4 drones) only extend the time your avoiding the tests slightly, and lose two drones and your taking the 255 casualty test anyway.
Someone has pointed out 9 BS fully kitted out to ensure survivability are close to a 1000pts and thats just not a viable option even in a 2000pt list, Oni does the math better than I do but I would think that in a normal 2000pt game the BS teams are really going to struggle to make that sort of points investment worthwhile, yes they hurt armour but after that a team is wounding 3 models a turn if conditions are perfect (LOS, hit and wound rolls all turning up good, failed invs etc), nah 9 Broadsides = badness
I always use broadsides due to so much armor being in my area. That being said, I only take one squad, as the hammeheads are better at keeping the enemy in LoS and their defensive weapons are effective on swarms. You really don't need 9 suits. If you really want to run the army, you should probably run them with multitrackers so you can pour as much fire into the enemy as possible before they get to you. I use the stabilization system myself, but I think the MT would work better in your case.
