Welcome to Librarium Online!
If you go Biel-Tan, do you HAVE to use the Avatar and Court of the Young King as your HQ choice? Or can you just use a normal Farseer as your HQ? I suppose the question could apply to the Ulthwe as well except the other option for them would just be the Avatar.
Both Biel-Tan and Ulthwe look like pretty good options. How do you think Alaitoc stacks up? Their rangers look pretty good and their path-finders seem to kick butt, but they're kinda expensive and are definately gonna get chewed up if you can't find suitable cover. Iyanden and Saim-Hann just don't look very good to me at all . . . things I'm missing there?
You do not /have/ to use the CotyK. You can simply field a Farseer, or two. Personally I usually take a Farseer + Avatar, or Avatar + Phoenix Lord. Or just Avatar, or just Farseer - it really depends what you're playing (Farseer pointless against Necrons w/ Pariahs, whereas Avatar quite useful).
At my local GW shop we have free reign to use special characters, so I'm starting to use phoenix lords more. Asurmen is good fun - oh dear, your Chaos Dreadnought is stuck in combat with him - and, oh dear, you can only hit him on 6s, have only 1 attack, and he has a 3+ inv save.
With Ulthwe I think you have the option of taking the Avatar with a Spear of Khaine (basically like CotyK, but with Warlocks instead of Exarchs). All are optional - although I think Ulthwe /have/ to take a Seer Council. Correct me if I'm wrong?
Alaitoc are great against Infantry, not so hot vs. armour heavy armies. And in /all/ games, you're going to rely on your force disruption rolls.
iyanden is low on troops, but the troops you have are hard as nails.
saim han is very much a finesse army as unless you produce 18 vypers with starcannons, you are relying on jetbikes, which require great care to be used to effect.
Court of the Young King is not essential. In fact I would highly advise against it as it will just slow down your exarchs and lower your avatars toughness.
Seer Council is essential to Ulthwe, you must have 1. No more no less.
Saim-Hann can be by far the strongest with mass vypers but you will probably get shot for cheese. Iyanden can work and is still playable but its not as strong as other craftworlds.
Alaitoc is excellent. Basically if you outnumber your oponent your opponents entire army starts off pinned or in reserve (basically). The sheer amount of improved sniper rifles means you will obliterate most enemies no matter whether they're MEQ or horde or godzilla or speedy or balanced. Alaitoc is in an excellent condition and I would highly recommend it. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.
The order of best to worst is as follows (in my opinion please dont flame it)
Saim-Hann (unless you go cheese).

If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
Not quite. The Ulthwe the Dammed list *Does* have to take a seer council, but thats not the list which can have the spear of khaine. The Ulthwe Strike Force Allows a Spear of Khaine and the seer council is optional. So, in therory, You don't have to take any seers in a strike force, it just won't be very fluffy, it could work for a themed army that isn't ulthwe but is just using the ulthwe list for the black guardians/vypers/walkers etc...Originally Posted by Alexb83

i started with Beil-Tan but switched for two reasons
1. every model is metal(mostly) and come in blisters of two so you waste some money on a 10man squad because one can't be used(if you use an exarch which i would advise)
2.There each expensive piont wise so you have little amount of men, and for Ulthwe you can use the portal
WHAT EVER YOU DO DON'T GET A COTYK!
