..after much research, I think I will be playing DE for my first army. Although they were not my first choice ( Eldar was, but i decided to wait out for the new codex.) they seem pretty darn cool to me. Ive read through many articles and the faq and i plan on buying the DE battleforce in the very near future. I just hope the players around here are patient enough to keep whooping up on a beginner fielding one of the hardest armies in the game..
Are there any tips or suggestions? Im open for anything!
Although I wouldn't EVER recommend someone to start playing with Dark Eldar, I think you'll have a great time with them. You'll probably be very frustrated at first because you don't have the nice thick armor or toughness that other armies can rely on, but once you get used to playing with Dark Eldar they prove to be a very strong force.

Don't kick your self just yet as I applaude your decision to start out with Dark Eldar - I did! You need to thoroughly understand the rules using DE more that any other army because they are fragile and won't tolerate misuse but like a fine race horse, treat it right and it will win for you. You will see many Marine type armys that get away with many tactical mistakes due to the defensive nature of their armour and survive due to lucky dice rolling, but if you survive with DE it is usually due to the fact that everything has "gone to plan." This plan has less to do with the vagarities of the dice and a lot more to do with how you handle them and results in very satisfying wins! Plans and tactics are a much larger part of the game with shock type armies such as DE, this being due to their polarised nature (read hard hitting but low armour). In other words, what works - works really well and what does'nt results in a loss by about turn three. I have never seen a game involving DE that has been close to a draw, so if you want excitement and your fiar share of losses go for a Dark Eldar army all the and smile when you win because it is entirely due to your own skills!
Thats what I was thinking.. My other thought was everyone talks about "getting used to DE" but by being a new player, I wouldnt know whats its like to play with +3 armor saves. Haha, im not too sure if it works like that, but its just a thought.
Welcome to a fantasticaly fun army to play. If your ego can take the initial losses you're likely (although by no means certain) to take then you'll probably learn the game mechanics and rules better than any space marine player.
It will force you to pay attention to what your opponent has. You need to match up your correct unit vs his, ie when to use a high STR power weapon vs an Agonizer and tactics like forcing him into giving you the counter assault. Consider the advantage of giving away first turn so that you have a last turn move in which to claim objectives.
Basically you'll come out the otherside a better player with a firm grasp of the rules and people will probably want to play with you more because... well, people are lazy and if they believe you know all the rules they will accept your judgement and the game flows smoothly.

I went straight from Necrons to Dark Eldar (quite possibly the BIGGEST switch in tactics possible)
But then I wanted two armies that were completely different to play.
The DE CAN be by far the most manuverable army possible in the game, and to play them effectively, I always have this though on my mind; Am I mobile?
Against tyrannids, MEQ and other weak shooting, the Dark eldar will run complete rings around them. They simply can't engage us in any considerable force as long as we're mobile, they can rush forward, side to side, desparately trying to get into combat, (which is our forte anyway) but we can flit around, devestating a unit at a time with a 3 or 4 way charge, cutting the hell out of the poor marine/genestealer/oblitorator squad, and consolidating backwards, back into our transports and generally gunboating (really good tactic against tyrannids, They hit against the RAIDER on 6's (which means genestalers can't rend) and then only warriors can glance, on 6's- all the while your splinter cannons and rapidfiring splinter rifles are taking down the poor fools)
If you play against an army which has little heavy-ish fire- expect to win (even if they have a little, it will be silenced quickly)
The DE as an army, in complete opposite to Necrons, NEED a good general to win. If you play a one on one battle, you will be destroyed. the bolter fire of marines is enough to destoy your transports.
A good DE general doesn't play fair, go man to man. The Good general completely outflanks his opponents, and strikes against one of the weaker (ie shootier) units in the army, that is a little isolated, with His HQ, some wyches, some warriors backed with a sybarite with a punisher and maybe some reavers.
So: to recap.
Don't play Fair.
Hey I started my first propper 40k army as Dark Eldar and I've only had one loss, I'm sure he'll do just fine, all this disencouragment might go to head. Stamp the filthy mon-keigh out!Originally Posted by Archon Ryan
