hey, ive been playing 40k for around 6 years. ive played every race in the game. i loved chaos and orks. ive been serving the emporer for half the time. im personally tired of the lazy freak, always sitting on his golden throne. so ive decided to go back to the greatest race of all (in my opinion) dark eldar.
here is my question. ARe they as good as i seem to believe? I ask this because when i played i would do great until i made 1 simple mistake then it all came crashing down. has this happend to anyone else?
Im also a little worried about the fact that we DE players have to rely on speed. my plan is to cut the enemy forces in half and nuetralize them with extreme firepower.
is it better to load everything is raiders?
is it better to sit back with a line of grotesques in front?
is it better to zoom around with 32 bikes?
what should i do?
Hi and welcome to the fold...... and yes Dark Eldar are as good as you believe them to be. You mentioned coming undone due to one simple mistake and this very characteristic of such a polarized army as DE. Happily this is correctable and not a "fault" with your chosen force, the fix being experience, getting used to a difficult force to wield is extremely satisfying and my suggestion is stick with it!
Worrying about using one of your main assets - speed - is this really the problem you suppose it is? Most armies would give their bolters to be able to flank like DE. Cutting the enemy in half and using extreme firepower is not recommended, do you really want to be surrounded and attacked all sides at once? A better bet is pick a weak spot and apply most of your force there, win that skirmish and move on. Your speed will enable you to choose the moment of the attack, your speed will enable you choose how much force will concentrated on that point, your speed provides you with a better save, your speed enables you to match opposing units to your advantage and your speed enables a tremendous psycological advantage by dictating the terms of the battle. Fear only losing your speed by being surrounded and out marshalled, as another forum member before quoted " speed is your armour," use it well my friend.
The specific tactics to use is entirely up to you but keep in mind that in order to win you must call the tune, you must force your opponent to react, you must attack first and you must do this in an overwhelming wave, all or nothing. Pick a point and go for it, bet you will be pleasently surprised with the outcome.
The raider army is tested and does work, not as great anymore as in the 3rd edition.
Grotesque screens arent nearly as useful anymore. Definitely not the road to take IMO.
I like reaver jetbikes but I wouldnt use them in such great numbers.
Some like the use of 3 reavers with 2 blasters which job is to hunt tanks.
Others units in 6-8 geared towards CC(and usually also Blasters).
I´d say making one mistake during the battle and its over is abit of an overstatement but DE are a very unforgiving army.
When you are getting used to DE they you will kick som arse
If you want a basic guide of DE, read the sticky. Gives a good understanding of the roles of DE squads and so on.
