Hey everyone I was hoping to get some of your insight to help my friend. He wants to start a Nid army but has also considered chaos. He has limited money to work with and I took a look and compared troops, stats, effectivness, money and all those things and told him since he was just getting into the game starting with chaos would be better since nids only shine their best when their in CC. Now would you guys say I was correct in my advise. Also if he still decideds to go with nids what advise can I give him on what to buy first. As a side note I know he can get single genestealers for as low as $2 a model and broods i belive their called for as low as $1 a model. Thanks for your help on this.
Chaos can be cheap $ wise due to high point cost per model. On the other hand, a Battleforce gives you a complete army (Warriors as HQ, 3 Troop Choices (8 per brood), and 1 Heavy Support. I personally to date have bought 5 Battleforces off of ebay (net savings of $150 total, 1 HT, 1 Lictor, 1 Zoan, 2 Tyrant guard, 1 brood lord, and 6 old school genestealers. This is about 2500 points total.
That being said, Nids can excel at just about everything. The best thing to do would read the codex, look at some battle reports and army lists, then decide. If he sees an army he likes go onto a website and do a cost analysis of all the models. That will put it in perspective for how much money he wants to spend. 40k and WHFB are not cheap. Back in 96 10 genestealers was $10. Now, you get 8 for $30. The good news is our Battleforce is being lowered to $90, but there is also a rumor that something will be taken out of it to defray the loss in revenue.
Depends on the nid army you choose frankly. You can have a shooty nid army and they really aren't as bad as you would think. Their bas stats improve pretty good and on a general level that have a BS skill that is about par for the course with everyone else. Nids can get very price with the sheer number of units you can field. Then again, a solid 250 dollars can get you 3 fexes and a tyrant and give you a solid start for a godzilla army and you can generally pick up ripper swarms cheap from people who don't use them at your local store.Originally Posted by X-law
While chaos have 'better stat lines' and look cheaper you have to remember what you need to buy to make them effective to play against. If you drop 100 dollars on chaos you can get a few boxes of troops. But even with that 3+ armor save they'll drop pretty quick and aren't nearly the close combat monsters you would think. And shooting tends to be overrated. I play versus chaos with my nids and the closest I came to losing was last night and only because she fielded the bloodthirster. Even then, my 55 dollar carnifex stood in close combat for 2 rounds against the thirster, a defiler and a bike squadron. And that is with only making 1 armor save out of all of those I needed (but I also made 2 regeneration rolls, woohoo.)
So generally speaking, nids are more versatile than you think, just depends on how you equip them. They can also be cheaper than you think depending on what kind of list you're making. I've already paid well over 600 dollars on my 2500 points. Probably closer to a grand by the time you add up the paints, primer, glue, rulebooks etc. But you can get a perfect godzilla army, codex, paints and the like for probably about 600 overall (no, you don't have to do it all one shot) since all you need is like 4-6 fexes and 2 tyrants. The rest will come down to glue, paint and greenstuff. At the same time, you could spend 20 dollars on some rare earth magnets and magnetize your carnifexes which then lets you swap parts as you please rather than turning all 6 into CC machine and then crying when you need gun-fexes.
'Nids... they're the best of all worlds.
nids are the army that takes minutes to learn and years to master.
I would recommend Tyranids. Now is a good time to play the bugs; they just got a new, balanced codex and model line and won't be changed dramatically for a long time. I don't think there's much of a money difference between the two. Troops are always cheap(ish) and the big bugs/tanks are always $$$.

All I can say is eBay all the way. Save tones of money, just watch the shipping charges. People can be sneaky there.
hey i have only been playing warhammer for not even a year yet, and only cus my bf introduced me into it. He plays Imperial Guards and i play nids. i have found comparing prices in the games workshop stores that nids are one of the cheapest. Though nids work well by having lots, cus their whole aim is to run up to the enemy and kill. Though buying box sets of 8 compared the two are the same. It depends would your friend rather a monstrous carniflex, or a great tank. The best thing to do is to take him into a gw store and show him wat comes in each army.
