Welcome to Librarium Online!
Well the title says it all really,i was just wondering should i bother getting the codex now and waste my money on models that will be replaced next year?or should i buy a little 500pts eldar army to learn the delicate ways of winning with eldar.
im just kinda sick of the simpleton way of playing my ultramarines.im sick of being able to ignore my cover and just wander about making armour saves without a care in the world.I want an army i have to use a variety of tactics together to win.that way it feels like ive truely earned the win instead of it being the fact i have super human space marines rolling around in half a tonne of armour plate.
also.i barely ever played against eldar before.so a very basic guide on what to stay away from and what to use model wise would be appreciated.
thanx in advance
chaos paul.....man i need to change my username,i dont even play chaos anymore.
INNOCENCE IS NOT IMMUNITY
The New Codex is out this year not next. October/November. So the Codex might be a bit of a waste. Depends on how much money you have I guess. Might get one cheap on eBay. As to whats good;
Guardians with Warlocks
Falcons (with starcannon, spirit stones and holo field)
Wraithlords (but a bit slow. Bright lance is ok on these)
Vyper (multi-shot weapons, BS is so-so)
But there is a LOT of variety and potential combinations. Some things work well with others. For example. If you take guardians with Hvy. wpn. platforms, Wraithlords and Avatars can be good support as they can keep up. If you dont take the platform you will need Falcons and Vypers as the Avatar and Wraithlord will be left behind.
If you want to start with this codex, have a quick look at the tactica, decide what units you like and myself and others can suggest ways to make it work. Unlike Marines dont think in terms of individual units. Eldar use combined arms to work not butch units.
I think you should go for it. They're more craic than marines are.
I think i might already have the codex about actually lol.i use a file sharing program to get codex's.then i upload them to my mates laptop and we just carry that around when we battle.its just i wouldnt print out the codex etc.plus i think i downloaded a virus with the eldar codex.maybe a bad omen XD
i should roughly have 100 euro's spare after me holiday to spain in 2 weeks.i was thinking of buying some guardians and just toying around with some paint schemes for them before i decide any permanent choices on models etc.

Sounds good. Enjoy spain man, I was there last month. Had a great time. Guardian models wont be changing so they're a good bet.
Well I don't know how things are over on your side of the pond but here they're dropping the cost of the battleforce from $115 to $90 making it a very good deal. I'd suggest getting that, a farseer, and a pair of heavy weapon platforms (the new plastic ones that are coming out oh so soon) as a way to get your feet wet on a budget. (for now you'll want to put the farseer on a jetbike).
After that maybe some of whatever aspect(s) you think is cool(for the feel of eldar I'd suggest some banshees or scorps and some warp spiders), and a pair of warlocks for the guardians.
If you're worried about spending too much money, I have models from my little brother (who played Eldar). He quit warhammer, and I snatched up tanks, farseers, warlocks, banshees, warp spiders... all the good stuff. Another plus is they're all assembled, and some are primed. He might still have the Codex laying around too. Check the trade forum for my thread, I think it might be cheaper than through GW.Originally Posted by sunnyside
There is a place on the forum where you can change your name man. Just search under the general bit. And you can be 'Elder paul' or 'not hard enough to play Chaos Paul' or something. (joke joke)Originally Posted by chaos paul
We know you'll be back to playing Chaos one day... muhahaha.
Seriously though, the eldar are the coinnosieur's choice. And if you can spell that, then you must deserve to win.

Hmm well nobody seems to be mentioning the new changes that are likely to be occurring! I will let you know of a couple to give you an idea. You may want to follow the rumors though if you are serious about going Eldar.
Guardians are a somewhat risky purchase at this juncture it seems to me. They are going to be getting replaced in a way as the main troop of the Eldar. Dire Avengers are getting buffed up and might be a 1+ requirement on them with the new codex. Guardians sound like they will be becoming a 0-2 requirement also, so that is why they are a risky purchase in my mind. One plus about this though, sounds like they will be able to have two support platforms per squad. If Dire Avengers get the buffs they are rumored to be, especially the 18" range on shuriken cats, then they are going to be a pretty decent troop unit.
Striking Scorpions might be losing their Str 4 and 3+ armor save. The armor save is pure speculation as no rumors as yet, but by dropping their Str to 3, it has been guessed at. They sound like they will still be Str 4 though because their swords are supposed to give a +1 Str bonus. Not sure how that could affect their performance, but also exarch powers are supposed to be going to all members of the squad, so if you were to take Crushing Blow, you might be having Str 5 Scorps, and that is quite nice. I would say Scorpions are still a safe buy though at this point.
Banshees, Fire Dragons, and Dark Reapers are staying the same, so if you like them they are good buys. All are strong units against Marines or Marine-esque opponents, so if you plan to be playing a lot of them, you could pick some up. Using them be careful. Banshees are devastating on the charge, but wont survive a prolonged combat in most cases, and Dark Reapers will attract a lot of fire, so even with their 3+ saving throw, they can die pretty quick. Dragons are awesome Terminator killers and anti-armor, but have only a 12" range, much like lots of Eldar weaponry, so you better kill in that first round. Warp Spiders are staying the same also, but are moving to Fast Attack supposedly. This could mess with some peoples plans as we have a lot of fast choices vying for a roster spot. They are still a great unit though and you can feel safe buying them.
Rangers are staying the same or even getting better, with no additional points cost. As I think they are awesome as is, they are definitely a safe bet, especially since the troop lineup is getting shaken a bit.
Jetbikes, Swooping Hawks, and Shining Spears are pretty bad right now, but are rumored to be getting better with the new codex. The bikes are supposed to be dropping in points while the Hawks are supposed to be getting stronger. I would wait and see what happens before buying them.
Wraithlords and Wraithguard are pretty much staying the same. May be slight changes like Wraithguard becoming troops under certain circumstances. I would say Wraithlords are a safe bet and Wraithguard as well, but they are a tough unit to learn to use. The Wraithlord is getting a new model as well, so you might want to wait. At the same time you might be able to find cheap Wraithlords right now too. War Walkers are of mixed popularity. Some people like them, others dont. They are not changing much, with the possible exception of getting a bit cheaper. Also, new models are being released. A popular combo right now is two Starcannons, which allows them to shoot 6 Str 6 AP 2 shots a round, obviously very effective. But they die easily and cost 100 points with that setup.
Wave Serpents, Falcons, and Fire Prisms are all mainly staying the same. Actually, the Fire Prism is supposed to be getting much stronger. I think it might become Heavy 3, making it an awesome long range Tank Hunter or heavy unit killer. If you want a tank, I would buy the Fire Prism kit as you get a normal Falcon and the Fire Prism bits to add on, and just make it somewhat interchangeable in case you want a Fire Prism later on. As of now, most people don't like Fire Prisms. Wave Serpents are your transport and Falcons are your main tank. Both are great units.
HQ-wise, things are getting shaken up a bit. Avatar is getting powered up big time and is getting a point increase as well. Right now, most don't like using him as he dies relatively easily. Farseers are losing a few stat points, but they are supposed to be getting a slight psychic boost. They are currently and should still be a viable HQ choice. Autarchs do not have a model and are becoming an HQ choice in the new codex. They are the close combat leaders of Eldar armies. They are supposed to be able to customize wargear, like a Scorpion or Swooping Hawk for instance.
I think that covers all the units. Weapon-wise, currently the best weapon for us is the Starcannon. Heavy 3, Strenght 6, AP 2. It is getting dropped to Heavy 2 supposedly though. The Bright Lance is the other main heavy weapon you will see in an Eldar army. Str 8 and armor above 12 counts as 12. Good tank killer on a Wraithlord or something. Currently the Eldar Missle Launcher, Shuriken Cannon, and Scatter Laser are of mixed though. Some like them, most dont. Especially for their cost. Support-weapon wise, the D-Cannon, Shadowweaver, and Vibro-Cannon are all extremely rare to see. They are not that effective.
Whew there ya go. That breaks down all the units. I would buy a Farseer, some Rangers, an aspect warrior squad of your choice; Scorpion, Banshee, Warp Spider, or Fire Dragon. Add in a Wraithlord with a Brightlance or Starcannon or a Falcon with a Pulse Laser/Star Cannon combo and you got a force to start with for now.
Actually for purchases I would suggest getting the battleforce which just dropped in price from 115 to 90. Making it quite a good deal.
Then to get a force you can field add a farseer and a pair of the new plastic heavy weapon platforms that are coming out any day now. With those you could make a force like
farseer, jetbike, singing spear, some psycher powers (stays behind other units so it can't be targeted and can take out vehicles and throw around guids fortunes etc).
two squads of 10 guardians with heavy weapons
falcon with spirit stones, holofield(you have to model them yourselves, I took a bunch of bits off some fake jewlery), and give it some str6 heavy weapons so they can all fire.
vyper with crystal targeting matrix and heavy weapon (or scatterlaser+shurican cannon)
then get 6 of your favorite aspect warriors and stick them in the falcon!
This gives you a solid start force for realitivly little money.
I just had a look at the new war walker models sketch's.and daaaammm.if they turn out anything as good as the design i'l have to get 2 just for the sake of it lol..So does anyone know for sure if many models are being replaced?Mainly for the reason that i'll have way more money when the new codex and models come out.Than i do now,or will have when i get back from holiday's.
Oh and i was thinking of maybe ulthwe(sorry if mispelled)There the all black coloured ones right?i though they'd look nice with silver trim and maybe some purple's.So i'll probably go for them.
