I'm sure this discussion has come up alot already, but I wasn't able to find a specific post. I'm wondering if anyone uses a dreadnaught over a Kan and why? A dreadnaught with 2 Big Shootas is 86 points base, a dreadnaught with 2 Rokkits is 80. For 10 or 4 points more you can get 2 Kans with the same amount of weapons.
The Naught's only real advantage is slightly cheaper are +1 armor in the Front and Side. However, against that you get 1 more full unit, so even if 1 Kan is popped you still have another. Plus you have the same amount of ranged weapons and in CC you have 3 attacks for the naught vs 2 each (4 total) for the Kans. Plus, if you only have 1 (or no) other HEavy Support in your army you can put the 2 Kans in seperate units.
I've been punching some numbers and reorganizing my main 1000pt army and have around 100 points to spend. I was considering getting a Naught with 2 Rokkits and Armour plates for 90 and then relaized I can get 2 Kans with Rokkits and no Plates for the same price, so wondering why someone would take the Dread? Wondering what I'm missing here...
I am pretty sure this came up before. My feelings have always been i would prefer a unit of 3 Killa Kans to 1 dreadnaught. I lucky shot can kill a Dreadnaught easily, and that same lucky shot would paste 1 kan. Kans as a squadron are highly survivable and gain some significant advantages over a dreadnaught in close combat. A unit of kans of 3 gives you more attacks, in addition once in close combat i don't see a big difference in AV 12 vs 11 in my games.
With my kans i opt to put them on a dreadnaught base anyway, so its the same killing zone just larger as i've got 3 in a squad. Plus i'm bound to lose 1 to shooting leaving me 2 for combat, and in combat i usually sneak a mek into base contact, my Big mek trails the squad to give a KFF and ability to fix those weapons that get blown off.

I only ever use dreadnoughts against Tau, as Tua can blow away kans with just their handguns.
A dreadnought has at least got a chance of surviving the first round of fire. Against other races (with weaker handguns), I use kans.
Dreadnoughts also have the option of mounting four weapons on them if you remove the claws, a good way of having a mobile heavy weapon platform. My favouite is two twin linked mega-blastas - great against terminators or crisis suits.
I was thinking of of trying a dread with two twin linked scorchas for urban combat, but don't know how twin linking scorchers work as you dont roll to hit with them; perhaps rerolling failed wounds with two templates, or just using four?

S5 flame templates that reroll hits? Oh the carnage.
You mean like...
I love my 2x TL skorcha Dred. Most games it does absolutely jack, but then there are games when it flames awhole squad of wyches, and a raider, and a full squad of DE warriors to death. :w00t: Don't forget, those S5 templates reroll Armor penetration, and do 2x damage to open topped vehicles! If you're playing other Orks, ED, or certain variants of Guard, it's a nightmare! :shifty:
EDIT: I prefer both Kans and dreds! Kans are cheaper and have the whole skwadrun thing. Dreds have more guns and can actually absorb fire (Krak missiles only have a 50/50 chance).

Skorcha-Dreads are fun and nasty against many armies. Bugs, IG, Eldar--all set aflame by these monstrosities.
However, skorchas are short-ranged. But, if taken against a squad with no tank-popping ability, this issue doesn't really matter.
On the issue of Dreads vs. Kans, 3 kans may have better survivability with their numbers, but a full squad of 3 kans gets heavy in points.
Either way, both Dreads and Kans are very orky.
lately i find myself in a sitiation where 3 KKs are more expensive $$ wise than noughts. i just cant really spend all the money and i'm forced to make due with proxies....
but in my last 1500 point game i played vs nurgle i had a nought and 3 kans, each taking a side of my pincher attack worked very well.
Your kidding me...... you play orks, you can take a toy transformer and make it look orky like for a dread (i havent but what a wonderfull idea........ walks to little bros room and pockets a toy):shifty:
Edit: forgot to talk about your quest im sorry, it really depends i would mind have 3 kans or a dread really is all up to you

the 2 TL skorcha dread actually looks like it has a crisis suit body with no head and different legs to me, but it could be just some random toy he got.
