Welcome to Librarium Online!
My friend (Marines) has been whining about how CoD is mainly designed for low armour/cheap model armies.. like my Tau and my other friend's Imperial Guards. His argument points are :
- Marines are expensive in models, comparing to (my army for example) my fire warriors.. they are not dispensable.
- All my 4+ Sv FW's suddenly gets a 4+ Cover Save against every weapons including the supposingly-1-shot-kill Heavy Bolters... while Marines dont benefit from the 4+ Cover because they do have their own Power Armour 3+ Sv.
- Because of the city terrains, difficult terrain tests are almost taken on every movement.. thus making the marines take up even more valuable time reaching my army. Perfectly set up for a shooty army.
I've been trying to convince him that CoD isnt only made for cheap and low armour armies.. (maybe except Tyranids.. ) I told him the terrain which slows his troops down also affects my troops line of fire.. but of course, he counter my argument with one of the above points and does not buy any reasons I say. He's actually winning more games at home when we play, but he's never satisfied when he starts to lose.. eventually, he'll burst out with the 'disadvantage' thingy that makes me feel really bad.
Anyone got some good counter-arguments that I could use on him?
Tell him to stop whining, or stop playing with him.
Honestly, it sounds like the typical (when I say typical, I mean stereotypical... not necessarily the truth) little-kid-SM-player stuff. The whole anytime someone beats their invincible Marines, or they don't get something someone else does, they whine about it.
Really, if he can't see common sense, then I'd either ignore him or quit playing with him until he does. Your army is probably just as disadvantaged as his, and Space Marines aren't 100% CC armies... tell him to shoot you back!
Just tell him his marines can buy move through cover, jump packs, etc. He can even take the engineers stratagem to help him move more easily. It's not the tau's fault that his slow army is losing, that's his. If I recall one of your opponents is chaos, and their statured lord gets to reroll difficult terrain for being monstrous, what more does he want?
That being said, JSJ (tau) and barrage weapons (guard) do put you at an advantage against armies without them (due to being out of LOS), and if he expects to outshoot guard or tau in a cityfight then he's just being ridiculous, you pay the points cost of the marine to have the extra CC ability, not waste it trying to outshoot a better shooting army.
Ask yourself why in the world would you trust a win loss record? Playing them yourself is the only way to tell.
The true joy in the game is playing down to the last model, no matter the odds.
personally, i have found that my marines fair better in CoD. all the blocked firing lanes alow my marines to get closer to the enemy without taking too much damage along the way. also, the battles are 10 times more interesting then normal battles and are much more challenging and requir more stratagy than normal.
Kick him in the face. It stops all whining.
Other than that, you could tell him to stop playing Marines and play another army to benifit from the save.
I'd love to play SM against Tau in CoD, most of the time our already few low AP will be worthless becuase of cover, almost better to simply take Missile pods, better range.
Our suits also have to take risks to duck in some terrain from dangerous terrain tests.
SM have it pretty good IMO....
Good point, I'll redirect that at him next time... but if it still doesnt work, then i'll have to refer to the drastic action ---Originally Posted by MiketehFoxOriginally Posted by Fideru
CoD rules favor HTH more than anything as the limited LOS and cover saves all around means unloading ridiculous amounts of bullets for a single kill, especially against something as tough as a marine. Marines should Ideally shred Tau in CoD unless there is a substantial experience gap between the two players involved. And just an FYI: A 3+ save is still good, and a 4+ cover save on top of that is amazing.
This sounds like another "Wine and Cheese" opponent who doesn't like losing.

Quick rules question (don't have a copy of the book on hand)...
When taking a cover save, does it give an additional role (meaning Cover Save AND Armor Save) or do you just chose one. . .
Logically, I think it would be both. But since when has GW operated by logic:wacko:
