Say for example I was using Maugan Ra, or any of the Phoenix Lords. Ra's sqaud gets eliminated and he is left all alone. My enemy shoots him with a lascannon, one lascannon, and he's dead. Why did I pay 130 pts. again? Is there some rule I'm missing that can stop this from happening?
Those who fight monsters should see to it that, in the process, they do not become one themselves. And if you gaze long enough into the abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.
The easy way is to not let your squad get wiped out... if it does make sure he isn't the closest thing. Its not much of a problem as if even 1 aspect warrior survives they cant pick out your lord with the lascannon.
The easiest way is spread out some guardians or an identical aspect squad nearby. They will make sure that if his squad dies he at least wont be the closest target.

If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
Yep, take advantage of the independant character rules - he can't be picked out if you have another squad nearby.
you are having a clasical case of having "an expensive IC and how do i make sure he does not die"
as said make good use of the IC rules and give him a nice big squad and you can even charter a wave serpant and drive him and his team around.
just always be sure that another model in the squad is in position to take the bullet/blast/laserbeam
