Basically my friend is thinking of starting out a Tyranid army, but I think I may end up doing most of the legwork, as he is a bit of a n00b but with a solid army he can learn.
So I come asking what makes a solid Tyranid force about 500 points?
I looked back 4 pages for other starting up threads, but found none, I also looked for 400-500 point lists but didn't find much.
So what does make a Solid Tyranid 500 point Force?

HERE is a link to what seems a balances army.
It's two basic gaunt boxes, a warriors box and a couple of zoanthropes... you/your friend are probably best of with the battle force to be honest.

It's just my friends older brother likes to hog the computer with internet at his house, so he can't get on to do the research he needs, plus he just needs alot of help learning tactics and stuff, bu the is a bit young and immature, but I'm slowing working on him!
Basically balanced armies can vary a lot with nids. You really need a synapse web, one of two heavy firepower guys to take out tanks or heavy infantry, and then you need some cc with some optional smaller fire bases (warriors with guns, more shooting set up gaunts like devourer or fleshborer). Like stated, the battleforce is probably the best buy because you get all of these things.
This was my force when I was playing 500 point games. It is pretty much just a basic list without a lot of fancy stuff but it played well for me. Made my friends really fear the power of warriors after they took out a terminator squad with only one warrior dying (he had a librarian in terminator armour with them).
3 cc warriors: toxin sacs, ws and I adrenal glands, flesh hooks, leaping, extended caraprace, rending claws, scything talons- 135pts (some people use wings but I like the better 4+ armor sv.)
8 spine gaunts: spine fists- 40 pts (I like spine gaunts because of the cost but some people use fleshborers which are only 1 pt more a guy.)
8 hormagaunts: adrenal gland I-88 pts (the I helps a lot against marines because you can go first in cc)
8 genstealers: extended caraprace- 160 pts
1 Zoanathorpe: warp blast, synapse- 65pts

Then get a broodlord and genesteelers so even if the somehow manage to kill your fex the genesteelers are a cross the board owning them
zander was ur 500pts even legal? (1 HQ 2 Troops) or just for fun who cares game.
If you end up using warrior's 500pt army list for eight extra pts u can give all thoes genes flesh hooks brining it up to 496pts. the flesh hooks will let the genes at least attack at the same time with an opponent in cover.
hive fleet of tyranids-2000pts
bad moonz orks-1500ptz
Orcs clan Red 'Eads-1000pts
what i mean is, disagree with the whole idea of playing a balanced army!
nids aren't balanced. if you've only got 500 pts to use, forget all the biomorph upgrades and put three times as many figures on the table as the enemy! THAT's what nids are about!!
you can get three warriors in charge for under 100 pts, that leaves FOUR HUNDRED POINTS to spend on a brood of 20 spinegaunts for 100pts, 16 termagants with fleshborers for another 96pts, and half a dozen genestealers to mop up - another 96 points.
you've got FORTY FIVE figures on the table for 500 points and that includes 3 synapse nasties, and 6 of those things that space marines are terrified of!!!
you've even got a few points for some frills...
don't spit out the bones!!!
