Welcome to Librarium Online!
I want to play a swarm army! Woohoo! After I painted the most "omg this is cheesey" look on my buds face after blowing his tanks to pieces with my 'crons, I want just SWARM everyone else. Just to see the look on their faces when I load my whole side with black and green (Color scheme, If I'm gonna go with 'nids). Now, 'nids are on the top for fun writing about and painting, but I've got 1k Sons next in line (Tournament play! Woot), then an armoured regiment last.
However, to choose, I'm going to have to ask you some questions: I'm yet to finish my 'crons army. I've only got about 1.3k of my 'crons, and, to finish them up, I was gonna buy a monolith and a few more immortals/destroyers and add to it with some Heavy Destroyers, but I was wondering: If my cash flow is low after that, will I still be able to support a swarm army in the low points? Or would I be better off simply making Godzilla army for the first few hundreds of points, or should I just be better off waiting untill I start my job again (It's seasonal, umpiring =D) to start a 'nid army so I enjoy it more.
Another question: What are some good Hive Fleet names? I have always pondered how you guys think of all the ones you think of, then I'm always thinking "Why didn't I think of that?". So, if you could help me on that, thank you;.
Making a large Tyranid swarm that fills up your deployment zone will now cost a bit more, as the old 3ed battle box came with 50 nids in it for say $150 Aus, and if you bought it all separate it would cost you $200, I myself immediately bought 2 of these at the time.
The battle box we have now for 4th ed still saves us money but it replaces 16 models with a Carnifex. The box has 31 models in it I think, haven’t got one yet,
Basically buying the battle box in the end is saving 65 bucks if I remember, so tech you get the Carnifex free. How cool is that,
But if like you said wanted a large swarm you will need to buy the gaunt boxes with sixteen gaunts in it. Can get a bit expensive.
Well for example.
I got my name from Lord of the Rings,
That bit ware it says in the move, "from the lowest dungeon to the highest peak I fought him the Balrog of Morgoth,
I took the name Morgoth, and changed it a bit to Hive Fleet Rockoth.
Try some names from old book and add a letter or take one away, might work.
It is true that swarmy armies can cost a fair amount and I think the battle force is a good buy. Not everything in the battle force is 'swarmy' but alot of it is. If you buy indivdual boxed sets try to get the ones that include a Ripper swarm because this will improve your numbers. Avoid Gargoyles they are very pricey and don't cost much points. Spore mine clusters deepstrike but can fill up slots on your force orginisation chart and are relitavely cheap. The without number special rule can also be used to increase the points slightly and provide hordes of Gaunts.
When it comes to Hive fleet names ancient mythology is a good place to look. Try also to think about what your Hive fleet does or how it fights for inspiration. Tyranids don't give themselves names so try to think about who first met your Hive fleet and what they would call it.
The Imperium will give it an ancient mythological name or something in latin. I don't know latin but if you can find out the translations for the words for swarm, multiple and horror they could be combined to give an interesting name. I haven't decided on my Hive fleets name because I'm redoing it and basing it on scorpions.
I would rather have gargoyles then gaunts with WoN. You can have about 12-18 man squads of gargoyles and they can be pretty dang effective espically if you can fire off your fleshborer and assault. Though the main problem wiht gargoyles is they cost a crap load of money so most people probally will convert termagaunts to get their gargoyles (also not to mention that the gargoyle models themselve are fragile little buggers).
Is it me or does any other necron player get annoyed when they see people saying "Necrons eat souls". How is that even possible as souls are part of the warp and necrons want nothing to do with it? Eh probaly me just me being picky.

I think it is still possibly to do a swarm army on the cheap with tyranids. For $250 (american) you can really get a nice force. What you need to get, and all players should get them to start is two battle force boxes. This gives you 16 hormigaunts, 16 genstealers, 6 warriors, two carnifexes, and 16 termagents (which are easily converted to gargoyles). That is your first 180 dollars. Your next buy should be a hive tyrant. If you can get one off an online auction you will be in the money; should cost about 30 dollars, maybe a little more after shipping. Now you are at $210 and you have 1510 points in 57 models. If you want to be more swarmy you can make the gargoyles spine or terma gaunts for 200 points less.
Your next buy should be two of the B sprue of the carnifex ($22.50) and it will make you two more carnifexes as long as they have different weapons and heads than your first two carnifexes. That gets you almost to 1750 points if you take these two as elites all for 250 dollars. I know this isn't the swarmiest Nid army, but if you add in the rippers, and pick up another box of gaunts somewhere your numbers will grow to swarmy proportions.
as the others say, 2 starter packs are a good way to go. thoe i started with termagaunts and some genes with a broodlord the starter pack is a good swarm set up.
as for names latin words involving a 'nids behavior is good. my hive fleet Gris is taken from the latin word for wave, undo or crispo. i also have i a paint sceme simeler to what yours will look like, mine our green skin, black carapace and a red trimming on the carapace edge with black eyes.
hive fleet of tyranids-2000pts
bad moonz orks-1500ptz
Orcs clan Red 'Eads-1000pts
swarm army cheap?
can definately be done
gaunt box sets arent all th at expensive
buying a boxed starter set as mentioned is the way to go until that job starts up, it will give you time to paint and memorize codex, and tihngs like that
as was said, foreign languages for words you think fit your style work
mine is hive fleet pondera
pondera is latin for balance
i keep a balance of big strong beasties and little swarmy buggers, as this fits my playing style well
the great thing about nids is they're so customizable
make it unique
it is your money goin intot hem after all
Nids - 1150 pts (I'm poor, dont laugh)
