Welcome to Librarium Online!
First of i'm very new to 40k (only a few days!) and me and a friend are working on the macragge set, however, I'm thinking once we're done painting it and making our terrain etc, that I would like to get into the tau.
But that led me to think, what do I do with all these tyranids? I was inspired by the Gue’vesa idea and wondered if a similiar thing could be done with the tyranid. What I understand is that the tyranids take orders from the Hive Mind, so I was thinking of having some kind of model that represents a tyranid mind control device. When the tau (or whoever) has device they have the ability to control the tyranids (probably just genestealers).
Now, if the enemy destroys the mind control model, I think the tyranids should turn against both sides, or if the enemy are tyranids too, join them. Maybe enemys could capture the device and turn them against the owner? If the device is destroyed I figured each tyranid unit moves in the direction of the scatter dice and engages in CC with any units it encounters.
Is this crazy? or legal? any thoughts?
Yes, you can use them as helpers, I don't see why not. Create whatever fluff you think is necessary and run them as guevelasa (sp).
You could also proxy the SM from the set as well.
I play with a guy that runs a suaran mind control theme as orcs. Great fun.
Most players are cool with 'proxies' or other fluff if they match an established stat line. I'd allow it, as your opponent.
Are they legal? No, that wouldn't be legal, exactly, but in friendly games your opponents probably won't mind too much.
I don't recommend using 'Nids to proxy as Gue'vesa simply because Gue'vesa have the stats of an Imperial Guardsman and use Lasguns... not very Tyranid-like.
It's an interesting idea, but don't expect to take it to tourneys, etc. ... and you'd have to make sure your opponents were okay with it.
Thats another use of the mind control beacon.Originally Posted by Lost Nemesis
On another note, I suppose it could make for an interesting scenario! Maybe some scenario that involves a comms bunker that was hacked to transmit hive mind control signals, etc.
One of the Shootiest armies in the game with an intentionally-designed weakness for hand-to-hand combat mind-controlling some of the best melee units in the game into serving them?
No. Way. Even if you tried that in a friendly game in my area you'd get laughed out of the club.
Just try to sell your nid models to someone else, or else keep them for starting a 'nid army later, or else chop them up and use them as casualties on your bases.
Well, he would be playing them as "human helpers", with their stats. He wouldn't be playing them as genestealers. Personally it is unfluffy but with your friends I don't see any problems as long as they agree to it.

If he's just trying to use the human helper rules then he's fine. If he's trying to put genestealers in his army he's going to at best going to look like he's trying to cheat, even if that isn't really his intention. A race that understands nothing of psychic power successfully duplicating a Hive Node with technology? That he specifically mentioned controlling genestealers isn't going to help his case.
If you wanted to control say, termagants, you'd probably be permitted. But Genestealers? No. Way.
First off as for a race that "knowns nothing about mind controll tech" aka the tau, if orks can pull off a mind control i dont see and way that tau cant do it.
But you have to understand every one hates the thaught of going agienst genesteals so ya try some Gaunts instead.

Maybe genestealers aren't such the best idea then! However, I don't think it would be _completely_ unfair.. especially if the rules including ways for the enemy to take control of the mind control device (capture/destroy, etc).
The rules could include that the Tau don't have the tech refined exactly, i.e a give them lower scores in combat.. lower Ld and a forced leadership test before each move, etc, etc.Originally Posted by JOHIRA
