Welcome to Librarium Online!
I know this has come up before, but as it is more than 205 days old, I couldn't reply to it so here is another thread.
It would seem that people generally think that Commander Farsight is a little crappy due to the restrictions, but I have one outstanding question that I don't think was address.......
Does the "Crisis Battlesuits count as +1 in the same way as firewarriors" mean you could potentially take larger squads of crisis suits? Or is it that you can take more than three squad of Crisis suits?
Surely this alone could come in quite handy? Lots of "cheap" Crisis suits... i.e. Fireknives at 62pts each... You could have quite a few of them and some other varients to take out tanks and MAYBE if you wanna throw away some points give perhaps some flamers and burst cannons on some (I know, I know I dont mean to blaspheme by putting BC & XV8 in one sentence but well... ner).
Im thinking of a top heavy XV8 suit army... might be expensive on the wallet but when you turn up with 5 Three Suit Squads, a Hammerhead, Snipers, A lone Squad of XV88's, I think the enemy might just have to rethink its tactics to your clearly overhelming manuverability!... Especially when you can deep strike them!
Or perhaps Im getting the wrong end of the stick here... in which case either correct me or ignore this silly silly overpowered idea!
Bare in mind that if this is possible, I am thinking CITIES OF DEATH here... we play it a lot, so scenery is a JSJ's best friend!
The 1+ just means you have to take at least one suit team regardless. You can have larger bodyguards with Farsight, but these are the less efficient Shas'Vre versions. This has been discussed at length and while a fun concept, it's just too many suits to really be effective. You drop the number of models to a point so low that you get outnumbered and beaten down by pretty much anything.
Blais's Paint Studio-Getting broken armies good soft scores since 2009
Oooh, so it is... As you may have guessed Im still new to Tau but I am enjoying the learning process on how Im going to use them. So, with Farsight there is the potential of having 20 Crisis Suits on the table? Farsight +7, Commander +2, and 3 x 3 regular suits... excluding 3 x 3 XV88's... for a total of 29 :w00t: In a 2000 point army that would be just nuts, let alone costing a small fortune.... hmmm Ebay... so anyway...
Each Suit can have a fire output of 3-5 shots per turn. so thats quite a few shots if you add it all up. And scenery depending, they can hide pretty well after shooting... And Im thinking of having a wave of marines in front of me to deal with CC... (Marines 2k & Tau 2k vs Chaos 4k... im looking forward to it).
Sure, hiding 20 battlesuits might be a little tough, but well... its a thought!
Yeah saw that Errata, just means you have to take a commander as well as Farsight... doesnt make ANY sense to me as the fluff suggests the faction is HIS and that he commands it.... bah, its almost as if there are 20 different people writing the rules for the Tau Codex.... It would seem official that there are no decent named characters.
Shadowsun - Crap
Farsight - Crap
The other Ethereal chap - Well he's Ethereal so - Crap...
First of Myst, welcome to the LO Forum!
Secondly, thanks for the rep.
Thirdly, having given me rep I take you all ready now my recent thoughts on Farsight.
I play a fluff based Enclave list (Just without Farsight. Its based on an Enclave that he doesn't command directly...but thats for when I make my fluff post.)
I really don't get why he's been designed badly (Rules wise) In this edition of the dex. (And if anyone mentions its for Money, I'll eat them *Sharpens sporks*)
In the old rules, you could upgrade your armies stats at the certain cost per model. Now that was the right idea. All I believe it needed was a slight adjustment to the post of said upgrade. Or maybe they could have been given a number of upgrades that you had to pay for. Like for example:
+1 I for 2+ pts
+1WS for 2+pts
+1A for 3/4+ pts
Its not that Farsight himself is bad. His stat line and wargear is quite tasty, but its the army list that he's supposed to give.
Taking Farsight for Tau players (IMO) is supposed to be like ...I don't know *thinks* SM Traits, or any of the Ordo armies...or IG doctrines. I feel it was supposed to be able to give Tau players a variation of what you could do.
Now with the new Fairsight rules, you can't do this. If I charge my FW now, I get no benifit anymore (Unless its Orks, and thats only slight) for an army that supposed to train extensivly in HtH combat, thats not good.
The only real way that I can use my Enclave now, and win or at least not die in horrid ways, is to use the army like a Tau army.....shoot stuff.
Thats my gripe with it.
NOTE! I'm not saying that the Enclaves should be monsters in combat, hell even in the old Farsight rules they weren't uber HtH death monsters of doom, but it gave them a better chance, and gave you new ways to play.

Eh, I like a farsight army because it's kind of a challenge to play. Plus I like the fluff behind my army... Farsight (and his stupid second-in-command, now :sleep, 72 fire warriors, and 1 vehicle :w00t:
Gloria Imperator, The Firstborn Stand!
- 2000pts Inquisition, 2000pts Vostroyans, 3000pts Vampire Counts, 1400pts Daemons, [WIP] 2500pts Death Guard
No worries Toastie, the posts I've noticed from you (and all the other peeps I have so far given rep to) have been very handy...
In all though, I think what I will do with my new Farsight model (I bought him the day I made this post cos he does look really cool), is build an army with lots of Crisis suits...
I know this will not be at all efficient, but what with me playing against IG in CoD, I think it will be rather fun, and annoy the hell out of the IG player!
My Idea for this silly army is going to be something along the lines of:
Farsight w/ 7 Fireknife BG's,
Shas'el w/ Airburst/Plas + 2 BG w/ Cyclic Ion, Burster & Missile pods
6 Stealth Suits
2 XV8's w/ Flamer/Burst Cannon
2 XV8's Helios For Tanks
2 XV88 Broadsides w/ Adv Stab for the Tanks
Most of the IG weapon fire should ping off and well... it will be fun. Pop out, flame, blast...boom... crack... pop back....
Maybe swap the Farsight BG from Fireknife to Firestorm for the extra carnage... 21 shots Str 5, AP 5, 14 shots Str 7 (instagib) AP 4... Should be damaging enough! Oh and then hide...
I dont think I will be getting farsight into combat... rather just using his +7 Crisis BG's for the fun of it! Perhaps one assault might be an option so they can rip apart some puny humans... or take out that command squad that will be harrassing them?

This is why the Aun limit the number of suits produced!
Sorry looks like I'm comming in on the tail end of this; and using fluff to bring up a point, but Meh.
The main problem you'll have with a list like this is the point's/ model, you don't have nearly enough FW's to cover their own pant's, and you probably won't have enough heavy support to take apart the enemy Uber Death. at the moment I think one thing as soon as I see this, Armoured company. And your too lite to realy stop one, ok, So your 88's do their job and take out three tanks in the first round. then four tanks converge on your position and take them apart. Cover for such a force is hard to come by and dev squads own this sort of thing if you look at chaos and SM. they tend to have just the bits to punch through or lever open this kind of thing.
Armoured company Tau might be worth a look if you are intent on this course of action.
I make a point of never laughing at stupid people. They can't help that they're stupid, just as I can't help hitting them.- Aun'Vre
Although this IS a Farsight army... The best you can field is
1 BS squad
2 Commander teams (one is guess who)
3 Suit teams
1 Pathfinder team
6 Firewarrior teams with Devilfish
It's not that open. Armoured Company is not this army's focal point, flavour is. And I like what Mystweaver's done with it despite the hamstrings he's had to cut to make it.
Post your army lists in the ARMY LIST section! Not that hard!
