Welcome to Librarium Online!
i looked at the warhammer store and there is nothing about the black defenders and im wondering if they have a diff name
black guardians most probably. from the ulthwe craftworld, probably why there was no 'official' mentioning of them.
basically they're ulthwe guardians that have bsX or storm squads with ccw and sc with wsX, might be wrong on that, don't have the book in front of me

Ok fellows we have a difficult task, so we have to be more deadly than everyday.
Make mistakes and confuse the enemy - The Doctor
Tactics are nice but it is violence that wins the day.
vulcan raven is right, those are black guardians from ulthwe. They gain an advantage over normal guardians by a +1 to a stat depending wether they are shooty or cc.
Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand things with alloys and compositions and things with... molecular structures.
the fluff reason for the black guardians having improved stats is that Ulthwe hasn't much espact warriors since they have so many farseers. this puts more strain on guardians to do the fighting and so they have more skill and experience, hence the better stats.
hope it helps
"Ask not the Eldar a question, for they will give you three answers; all of which are true and terrifying to know"
Very close. Ulthwe is has a shortage of Aspect Shrines, and uses guardians more frequently.
The big thing here though, is that the Black Guardians are actually a standing, active army rather than just militia, like regular guardians.
Arvan'drynn Craftworld - 15,000pts (deceased)
Tau - 2,000 points (atomized while on patrol)
And (since no one's actually mentioned this yet) the reason they can't be found in the store is because they just use regular guardian models in a black colour scheme. Rather than simply being called up in times of need, they are professional soldiers, hence it is understandable that they are more effective in combat than regular guardians.
