I'm trying to figure what to buy next (other than the megaforce) and was wondering what everyone else thinks of vespids. I like the ap of the gun, and thats about it.
vespids are terrible, i know from experiance. i tried using them and they really aren't as useful as they sound. there too fragile. if you need a MEQ killer, use crisis suits.
Vespids are not as bad as you say. They are just a hard unit to use and have to be used at the right time and place (so you need to have them in a good postion at the start or just go there as they are pretty dam fast). With a full squad of 11 with the strain leader plus two ML hits they hit on 2+ and wound on 3+ against SM which can be life saving (espically with ever present assault marnie squads). So you can't really use them as offensive units but instead counter charge units which makes them IMO more of a static armies unit then anything.Originally Posted by alexpape7

Like he says.. Vespid is a very difficult unit to use. It will depend on your judgement and the amount of covering terrain for their survival. High point cost (to Tau standard) + low armour save.. they can be shredded in one turn of shooting from anything even imperial flash lights. But if you can manage to use them right, a squad of 6 with the help of markerlight can easily earn its point cost back.

at one mega battle, when i was playing my marines(my army besides tau) i fought against a fellow tau player. in the scenerio, their was something similar to sustained attack, where every once in a while you would get some of your guys back. anyway, i think i killed his vespid squad like two or three times (and i wasn't even concentrating on them that much)throughout the course of the battle and they didn't kill a single thing of mine.
While the AP of their weapon is nice, its made worthless by the units survivablitly.
Thats added to the fact that if your stain leader dies, and you fail morale checks, the units proberly not going to come back that often at all.
I would rather spend the money and points of more crisis suits.

one squad of vespids are pretty bad. however, 2 maxed out vespid squads could be pretty good. i have not had the opportunity to try out this idea (i only have 6 vespids) but i have thought of it for a while. 2 vespids concentrate on a regular ten man tac squad. 22 shots, 11 hit, roughly 7 wound. if u have three squads, then 33 shots, roughly 17 hit, roughly 11 wound! :w00t: u charge all of your squads on the left overs of the squad. 44 attacks, 22 hit, roughly 7 wound, and 1 would die with 2 squads. if three, 66 attacks, 33 hit, 11 wound, roughly 4 will die. this is all average so it might work and it might not. u can also use them as assasains. most units have armour saves of +3. also, they can destroy vehicle back armour. i use my 6 man squad alot but so far, they have been used as suicide guys. so it depends. if u want to use up 2 fast attack slots for vespids, then it is your choice. if u want to use your slots for pirhanas and pathfinders, again, up to u.
i guess that could be effective, but you still have to consider the fact that two or three maxed out squads would spend up alot of points, which would probably be better spent on something else.
The Vespids were in my opinion the biggest dissapointment in the whole Codex, I can remember the hype that accompanied this unit when the AP3 weaponry rumours surfaced, 'oh wow we are gonna get Marine killers at last'.Originally Posted by alexpape7
Wrong, the Vespids are just so wrong in so many ways:
Fleet is ok if it offers some sort of advantage, but all fleet does is put Vespids in range of a lot of hurt.
No jetpack, if the Vespids had the JSJ move they would be a much more viable unit, I dont think a unit of vespids with JSJ would be overpowered, given the next bad thing about them
5+ save, this is bad enough but when its coupled with the range of the Vespids weapon GW sealed the vepids fate as no hopers.
A marines bolter is a 24" rapid fire weapon with AP5 no Vespid unit is going to stand up to 18 to 20 rapid fire bolter shots at BS4 even a reduced unit of Marines say with 3 or 4 marines is going to hurt a vespid unit.
I really do not see the point of a vespid unit, they are a missed opporunity and its a pity
