Tyrant guard: Scythes or Whips
Which is a better set up if you are using a Hive Tyrant with 3 Tyrant guard, All Scything Talons? All Flesh whips? Or just one with Flesh Whips and the rest with Scything Talons? or any combination of the above.
Let me know what you use or prefer.
Firstly you ask if you can have one of the Tyrant guard with lashwhips, you cannot. The option to give each of your Tyrant guard different upgrades isn't presented, they must all have lashwhips or scything talons, sorry but you are not allowed to 'pick and mix'.Originally Posted by Thlaylie
Lashwhips will work well if you expect to face powerful multiple attack enemies. Armies such as Worldeaters or other Tyranids. Lashwhips could also be very effective against Terminator marines and nasty Marine HQ units. The problem with lashwhips is by taking them you reduce your killing power. Less attacks equals less rending.
If you think you will often be facing enemies like Imperial guard or Tau I wouldn't bother. Reducing the attacks of those who are pitiful weakling in an assault is a waste of time. You will find most standard troops in many armies don't have more than one attack. Because of this lashwhips will make your Hive tyrant and Tyrant guard an excusive unit best put to use destroying things like Greater daemons and Terminators.
Basically it won't cost you any extra points but you should decide if you want such specialsation. Hive tyrants often attract powerful enemies looking to make a name for themselves by destroying a Tyranid HQ in assault. I think if you feel you may want it go for it. It will change exactly how your HQ performs but it will throw a new kind of threat at you enemy.
