What is the best weapon loadout for a walking shooty Tyrant?
I agree with macewind
Barbed and venom are great, with his good BS of 4 upgrade, the shots will hit more often then not, but still with Tyrant guard supporting him, he is still a very dangerous opponent in CC,
Anther weapon to out fit him with is the duel twin devours, with 12 shots re-roll all missed then re-roll all failed to wound, there’s a good chance that the opponent will be taking about 10 armour saves, Some people will give wings to their Tyrant to make up for the devourers short range but I believe that this will leave him in line of fire with no guards to protect him.
Also with the combo, some people give him cc stuff as well, so after he shoots the unit he assaults it, some smart players will undoubtedly remove the models he can only reach to assault thus negating him the charge and being shot next turn at point blank range,
My advise is don’t give devours to flying Tyrants, give them two walking ones with guard, their range isn’t that bad, move forward 6 - range 18 =24 about average.
I can also tell you a weapon that you should never give a Tyrant and defiantly not a Carnifex, it’s the Deathspitter, with new rules about the blast template (the small hole must be placed over a models base) the template is three inch wide and a average models bass is one inch wide the opponent doesn’t even have to space his models out to max coherency, just 1 inch between them is all he needs, A barbed strangler can do a much better job, as for the other weapons like flesh borers and spine fist, well there on little gaunt for a reason, their crap.
I think that’s it but I believe others will have their say.
definitely the vc + bs option.
I say you should try both options first: 2xTL devs, (my favorite for flying rants ... good in shooting and still good in CC) and the one with VC + BS. Though if you fight a fast moving army ,and don't want to do an army list good versus all armies, try the CC walking Tyrant. I tried it and smahsed through a LR like it was butter. But then ... i got lucky because he came to close ... it's kinda hard to use TMC effectively ... most of the times they won't get their points back.
Considering I've already got two Gunfex's, for me a BS on a tyrant doesn't seem that appealing with a low strength. The two different load outs I was thinking of for my walking tyrant would be either the 2X TL-dev, or TL-dev and VC. I like the VC as it takes advantange of the larger amount of shots the tyrant has compared to fex's, and can instant kill SM heroes/thousand sons. The TL dev is there for volume of shots, again taking advantage of the tyrants larger attack count. The VC also means the tyrant can shoot from turn one, and can help with taking out light vehicles/skimmers.

I disagree. I think a BS is a waste of the tyrants attacks especially at a low strength in comparison to that on a fex. I don't think mixing ranges is a problem either as you'd move it forwards anyway to support your units. I think you'd want a tyrant with three guards up around the enemy by turns five and six anyway, finishing the enemy off, and what the venom cannon does is all you to shoot from turn one. No where did I say use a TL VC as I also think it's a waste of points, especially with the better options you can give it.
Personally, for a walking tyrant I would use tl-dev+VC. The short range of the Tl-Devs means you will likely miss a turn or two of shooting with it, but its cheaper and much easier to hit with. Besides, its a tyrant- your likely going to be advancing with it because even with no scy-tals its still pretty powerful in CC, especially with the guard, so except for the first turn or two the short range shouldn't be much of a problem. I guess it mostly depends on wiether you want a high potential shot (the BS) or the shot that regularily hits several times and wounds a lot (I believe the tl-devs have above 80% chance of hitting and above 80% of wounding against T4 compared to the 66% chance of hitting and 66% chance of wounding the BS would have.)
