Alright, I'm not a Tau player, but my friend is. He loves his Tau. And I understand why.
But now herein lies my question. He plays with Jet pack suits and a pair of hammerheads. His usual tactica includes hiding his suits behind terrain which I can't see them behind. Rising up a couple of height levels, shooting, and then assault lowering them down again. As I understand it, this is perfectly valid since with each movement you can move up or down (if circumstances allow) the same distance you may move horizontally. But my question lies in the Hammerhead, or just Skimmers in general. Can THEY do this? As I see it with them, they get no assault move and therefore shouldn't be able to lower themselves back behind cover (big cover) after shooting. Am I correct in this assumption? I just know that the two of us are both pretty new at the game and mistakes have definetely been made in the past by both of us in turn. This is just something I'd like to clear up because it could definetely help me out.
The suits can do exactly what they are doing, though If they are moving into cover, they either have to roll difficult terrain (cuz they're walking) or they have to make dangerous terrain tests as they jump in. The assault move always is a jump, so if he does it into terrain, that's a test , too. Make sure to call him on that.
The skimmers can only move, then shoot. However, if in terrain, it is assumed to be hovering above the terrain, and still has LOS with all. If behind the terrian, the terrain blocks LOS as usual. Certainly wargear can let the vehicle hover in the terrain, but it's useless and no one gets it.
