IĀ“m going to start a new tau army now, since i love the models and the fluff. Have been playing imperial guard for a couple of years and have about 3000 pts, so I think its about time to move on.
The fluff is going to make them a speedy army, all in transports, deep striking, fast moving, and so on. So i want all of my army on the move and ready to respond to any threats.
So hereĀ“s my plan:
1. Combat patrol 400 pts
-2 squads of firewarriors in devilfishes
this iĀ“ve pretty much decided that iĀ“m going to do, so no arguing there.
2. 1000 pts list
now, here i need your help, what should I add?a couple of battlesuits, commander in a battlesuit, one more firewarrior squad and devilfush, stealth suits, hammerhead, fast moving stuff that is...
so the questions:
1. Is the combat patrol good or truly bad?
2. What models should I add onwards? On the 1000 points list?
3. Have a suggestion for a list?
thanks for the help!
-Guardsmen, all the way!!
I don't play Combat Patrol, so your on your own there. But it seems like a decent list. I would probably rather have a unit of troops in a devilfish, 1 HQ crisis (100 pts), and maybe a unit of 10 kroot for a bit of CC ability.
Well, you absolutely need the codex and a battlesuit commander @ 1000 pts for the 2 troops and 1 hq requirement. After than, it's really up to the overall type of army you want to play: mech, hybrid, or static (these are generalizations, I know).
It sounds a bit like you want to play a mech list (big assumption on my part). I personally would go with a couple of units mech firewarriors (the 400 pts above), at least 1 HH, a commander, 2 monat crisis suits (FR/MP), and 2 units of 10 kroot if they can fit (for infiltration). Any left overs can be used to get another commander, @ 97 pts of BS 5 of death & destruction it's the best model on the table, or a FB pirahna for objective grabbing. It's really up to you. I suggested what I think I might get were I in your situation.
Again, though, it's how you want to play. For instance, I don't play kroot because I don't like the models, but I can't deny their abilities (they really are great). And I love crisis suits, so I go for them just about as soon as I can, and always have 2 crisis commanders in anything over 500 pts. That being said, figure out what style/models you like, and build from there.
Hope it helped.

Tau is kinda like guard, ecpet you should move around a lot.......which makes it completely different.
Glad I could help.
I would point you in this direction for my advice on starting a 1000pt list.

The combat patrol list is decent--I would drop a Devilfish and add a couple Crisis suits, but that's mostly a personal choice. XV8s really shine in CP as it's hard for your enemy to pull off a headlong rush down the table to get at them.
For your list, remember that a commander suit is mandatory now. The rest depends on your style of play. If you want mobility then Stealth suits would be a fairly safe buy, but get a full squad of them if you do--they're ineffective at low levels. Don't bring any fusion blasters on them, either, not until you're comfortable with how they play.

Umm, I suggest taking decoys on your devil fish, it gives them better survivability. However, even with basic FW teams this pushes your pts cost upto 410pts. Kroot are a GoooD idea(did I stress that enough?). Umm, read as much Tactica as you can get your hands on.
As for the 1000pts list, I have two suggestions: Rail heads. They are realitivly easy to use and useful in countless involvments.
And Fire knife commander (Plasma, missile), they are forgiving of new players.
