With the lessening of the points brunt on Shining Spears, do you expect them to overtake the Vyper on the field.
I know I'll be fielding a few.
By a longshot. It's not just that the spears are better now either. It's also that the vyper is nerfed with the stargun, overpriced bright lance, and lack of a crystal targeting matrix.
I think hawks may also make a showing along with warp spiders. But I don't think vypers can compete with those options.
However a vyper makes a nice conversion as a "jet chariot" for farseers and autarchs. Personally I think farseers just look silly on a regular jetbike, but maybe that's the Ulthwe in me talking.
I haven't brought Vypers to the game since the new codex has come out. But, Swooping Hawks, Warp Spiders, and Shining Spears have all been brought to bear so far. (Not in the same game of course.) And right now, I have to say that the hawks and spears are my current favorite Fast attack choice.
And I think I will be bringing regular jetbikes to battle more often too....but they are Troops now :w00t: !

Yeah, at $15 bucks a piece, we have some of the most expensive troops in the game.
I like them though.
Gareth is the person I try to impress when I convert and paint.

However the plus I'm liking at them moment is the Scatter Laser and Shuriken Cannon combination, lots of strength 6 goodness for only 70 points, perfectly ideal for squadron formations not to mention excellant fast anti-infantry support.
I can probably say with confidence that this will be their main role for a while.
I think vypers still have a place over shining spears. Shining spears are good, and I'd like to use them - but it does commit you to getting in close and breaking your opponent in one round of combat. If you don't manage that, you're stuffed.
And against horde-type armies, I'm not too sure about them at all. So few models would likely get dragged down pretty quickly, and those TL catapults won't be of much use for the points you pay for the unit.
The vyper is less situational than the spears, and will just require some thought (or plain sacrifice) to get the most out of.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
I was thinking of getting vypers with scatter lasers to replace my shining spears when I face those bloody tyranids. 6"movement + 6"fleet of claw + 12"assualt = my 237pt. shining spears beening flushed down the drain. For horde armies like this I believe vypers are better than the shining spears(unless I can get to the biovores). Like all units in the 40k universe their both circumstantial.
spears seem more survivable and can be paired with an autarch. spears also remind me of medieval knights and i just like their fluff. to me vypers only have a use as a converted hover shariot for autarchs and farseers on a jetbike
