Bringing this post back from the dead.

Swooping Hawks are pretty decent against lots of low toughness troops, with the Grenade Packs, and upped-lasguns, but their point cost is really high for an Aspect Warrior with a jump pack. 22 each is more then a Necron Warrior, for a model that more or less isn't all that useful. The Exarch is the exception, since he's a flat out badass with his wargear options, and awesome stats. Warp Spiders are really useful, in whatever way you want them to be, and unlike the Hawks, theres a reason to take the 22 point model. Its got a great weapon, and is just as mobile as the Haws, if not more so. Once again the Exarch can be tooled up like a Maniac-Death-Machine, but the Warp Spider Exarch gets even more useful abilities (Although they come at a steep price.)

I think it is a personnal4 preference thing, and I come down on the side of the hawks, largely cos I love the figs, the only real questions there though are which do you prefer for esthetic reasons and which is fluffier for Alaitoc, I suspect dthat given snipers propensity for hide and seek, spiders are the fluffier option

I use both, but I prefer the spiders, since in order for the hawks to effectively attack something they have to put themselves in a position to be shot at or assaulted, while the spiders can either make a second jump or use withdraw to avoid taking alot of punishment. Being able to charge something that is 18+d6" away with a tooled up hawk exarch is really nice though. And actually having some infantry with more than 12" range is also very nice... stupid guardians.

Guardian's can also get the best Marine-Killer money can buy: Starcannons. You don't see that kind of gun on a Swooping Hawk Squad.

Except guardians suck, and 90+ points is alot to pay for 1 starcannon with a low BS and crap survivability. And don't give me the conceal+fortune crap because thats WAY too much to pay for a BS 3 starcannon.

What on earth are you on about, if you want a star cannon cheap and you are not concerned with survivability take a vyper, if you want a little more accuracy, take a war walker with 2 star cannon

Gaurdian defenders are there as a mobile short range fire power unit, for 160 points you get 40 shots, you are probably best charging anything left from the shooting cos they are gonna be so badly damaged you are gonna win. easy.
including heavy weapons in a defnder squad changes the makeup and role, it no longer fleet of foots, it becomes a far more static/defensive unit, but the point is no one can afford to stand 13+ inches away and fiire 10 bolters at 22 defenders in cover whilst they are getting panned by a star cannon, do the maths, 1o marines would take down roughly 12 gaurdians in the time it would take to wipe the entire marine squad, the star cannon forces the marines to close into the mouth of the shurken catapults, at which point the gaurdians can shoot then charge and finish off the survivors
Everything you have been told is a lie!
