Hi chaps. I'm buying me GFs nipper an ork army for christmas so i'm on the hunt for some minis. I have very little idea how orks actually play and was wondering if I could have a few ideas. I have the Codex but reading one sheds very little light on an army IMO.
Me and the boy played against orks for the first time a few weeks back using my DA and had what was TBH one of the most fun games i've had for a long time. My opponent isn't the greatest player at the club, and it was only a 750pt battle anyway so we just selected a few squads and went at it! Basically he charged headlong at me with grots, Boyz and some rocket pack chaps (can't remember what they are now...) while I blasted away desperately. Just before his army got to my lines and starting 'choppin', the squads started breaking one by one until they were all on the retreat.
During the game I picked up lots of their 'unique' special rules and the nipper decided he wanted to collect them. Screens of weeds that give unmodified cover saves and bravery in numbers sounds like a great fun army to play
Now, I'ce had a look through this section of the forum and the Tactics bit (none there... ) and I'm really none the wiser as to starting an army. He's decided he wants to paint them a darker more sinister colour (brown actually) to stop them looking a bit too gimicky and I believe he would go for a horde type infantry list (Footslogging??) as opposed to mechanised (which I'm assuming Speed Freaks are ??).
So where do I go from here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated boyz
Very, very roughly, I'd suggest the following.
1+ units of slugga boys. Nasty on the charge, fairly cheap, will hold together in a largeish unit (15-22?) Burnas are mean close up, and can work as flamers too!
A unit behind the boys. Could use burna boyz or maybe scar/ardboyz. I don't use either of them. This unit will mob up with the sluggas if they break. A burna unit can take a mek, who can have a kustom field to give nerby orks a 5+ cover save.
Killa Kans. The more the merrier. Everyone hates these rotters, and for good reason. Only downside, not very fast. Give them big shootas, as orks can't hit a barn door from a pace away.
Dread. Like a big fat kan.
A tank? Lots of people use a looted basilisk. Battlewagons aren't bad, although you'll have to make one yourself and everyone will shoot at it. They can also be a bit of a points sink if you go for the "squillion guns" approach.
Something quick. For footsloggers, stormboyz (jet pack chaps) are apt, but they're not as durable and pointsworthy as might be thought. If you use them, take a load and use leadership items, as they can't mob up. I prefer a screen of bikers with a wartrukk behind, containing either trukboyz or a warboss. Trukboys hit less hard, but survive crashes well. Warboss is mean and can have a kustom field and nob bodyguards.
Be careful of mega-armour - it slows you and your unit down horribly. If the warboss is on foot with the boyz, he'd be better off with eavy armour and bionics.
There are loads of ways to play orks, and they are fairly forgiving. Most methods involve running up to the enemy and smacking them. Always try to get the charge, and have successive waves if on foot to mob up with. And finally, these are just my thoughts. Others may disagree!
Lots and lots of Boyz is important for an ork force. The 'Mob up' rule makes it even more important to have lots of units.
Having at least one unit of Trukkboyz (orks in a transport) is REALLY useful, since they can quickly get into close combat, but if you really don't want any vehicles, consider a mob of gretchin to walk in front of the orks and provide cover for them. For the points I consider the gretchin to be a great value--if he shoots them, that many fewer guns are killing my Boyz, and if he shoots over them the boyz get a cover save!
I suggest not getting too distracted by the 'neat' units until you have a good-sized core of troops. Without those, orks are really vounerable and frustrating to play.
I've been daydreaming about a pile of CC troops pouring out of open-topped vehicles. Dark Eldar seem to excel at this, the Boyz seem like a good fit too.
Can you build an army around that?
Gorkamorka was fun for the month or so people played it around me...
RecklessFable's Journey to Mediocrity (Painting an IG army)
I've been addicted to World of Tanks lately and neglecting my IG... But it is so... much... fun!
Ork kults of speed (a.k.a. speed freaks) are orks that are all mounted in fast, war truk transports and supported by squadrons of warbuggies and warbikes. It is a very fast, tactical and hard hitting army that is very fun to play. It has a tendancy to get wrecked quickly if you get off to a bad start.
