Welcome to Librarium Online!
Ive just read the rules for these weapons properly and am wondering if anyone uses them?
From the rules ive just read you can give them to gaunts AND gargoyles.
Theres two ways to take them, either...
1) in full units. This is expensive as they cost more than normal gaunts, BUT they can infiltrate and still have fleet, so 1st round CC is possible. Good for combining with a broodlord?
2)every 1 in seven gaunts can have one of the weapons for 10 points. So thats a possible unit size of 28 spinegaunts with 4 strangleweb's or spike rifles. For me this would be great. With strangle webs your almost guaranteed to get 4 flamer templates with pinning to the front lines. And spike rifles wounding on a 4+ regardless would certinatly give the spinegaunt unit some kick!
What do people think?

Spike guants are actually quite good for 10pt. each. Deploy them by infiltrate 'outside' of the Synapse range and have them lurk inside of a terrain.. suddenly your 10 points gaunt would start wearing carapace armour or even powered armour saves... while still able to deliver nice shots up to 18". Sniper gaunts!
You can no longer use them as mutants, GW have done away with those and the only way to still field them is by complete broods.
The weapon-mutant was only possible under 3rd edition. Since 4th edition has done away with weapon mutants (and the 'you can only have X-units avaliable to your whole army' rule required to use them), they're only avaliable as a full brood. The weapon mutant rules are there for people who are still playing under 3rd edition rules.
You can get them either in full broods or as "mutants"... The online rules for Spikes and Stranglewebs gave out rules how to use them in basic, non-Mutant 3rdEd lists, and those would be still allowed in my opinion.
When it says 1 in 8 Gaunts, that still applies as that limit isn't dependant on the obsolete 3rdEd Mutations and Custom Hivefleet rules. Remember: "If You are using the unmodified Codex rules...", and You certainly are.
However, the problem would be that the rules for Spikes and Stranglewebs are not in the Codex nor are they marked as "permission not required"... Thus I believe common courtesy requires one to ask for opponent permission if planning to use these Gaunts.

"The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all biomatter consumed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be devoured."
I saw someone using a brood of spike gaunts during this year's Games Day.. I believe you CAN use them much like the Forgeworld models, no permissions required... you need to have a print-out of the rule ready though, that's according to the staffs at my local GW store.
nekochen you went to Games day..? holy crap i dident see you!
any way yeah iam sure u can use them and i think you do have to. its like using a titan. well not quite as big. on a non stupid point if no one knows the site where they are!
GW Online : Warhammer 40,000 : Tyranids : Spike Rifle and Strangleweb Rules
No sig required.
Wait a second, I have been wondering about this for a long time:
In a strict tournament setting, can you use ANYTHING that is not published in the Codexes or the FAQ's? Including: chapter approved, GW website stuff, tyranid special characters, etc?
I gots to know!
Tyranids: 2500 pts
Imperial Guard: 1000 pts
Witch Hunters: 1000 pts
um, usually, you should check with the tournament organizer, before the event starts. Like around here, even in just our crapy local tournaments, we are really slack about the paint jobs and WYSIWYG, but we don't allow any forgeworld, Chapter Approved, or Non-codex units.... just depends on where you are. I think though, for Rouge Trader, Chapter Approved is out. I think I heard something about them canceling all 'Apendex' armies... But that didn't stop me from doing my Kroot army.
