Welcome to Librarium Online!
i am going to start an eldar army soon and i cant figure out how i am going to be able to beat tyranids. bi know i will need a couple of FP's and Jain zar, but i am not sure what else. i was thinking about some avengers and some banshees for jain zar, then some scorpions. i am also thinking about either a farseer or an avatar for the second HQ slot. i think i might also do a scatterlaser squadron of war walkers. what do you think?
Zoe: Doesn't the bible say something specific about killing?
Preacher: Yes, but it's somewhat fuzzy on the subject of kneecaps.
Why don't you make a list and we'll critique it?
Everything I have told you, even this, is a lie.
A 3WW squadron with Scatter laser will help (or EML...but that way they became very expensive)!
EML!...lots of EML in WS, Vyper or Wraithlord
[EDITorry!I mean to write Wraitlhord!...(not wraithguard)]
FIRE PRISM!!!...a lots!(2 will do the trick! And they will work better then falcon against a typical nids army)
and a couple of flamers and 1 or 2 units os Hawks with Skypleap!(An Autarch with wings will help in this case)
Scorpions will work better against nids. They have more atacks anda +1S and with the Exarch..and Karandras!!!You will have a lots of atacks!
Maybe a full squad of Vibro Cannon...no LOS and will hit everything in the way ( your guys to!!)

When I know I am going to be fighting Tyranids, I have a few things I never leave home without, and some things that fit into a 'take all comers' list.
My Army is lead by a farseer on jetbike.
-He lets me get to where I need to be to use his psychic powers. As well as ensures that he can avoid all but the fastest gaunts. And, if he does get snatched up by some hormagaunts, the extra toughness and armor comes in very handy.
-As far as counter assault units go, this is the only one that should ever make an appearance in your army. High strength, and a ridiculous amount of attacks means that you will slice and dice your way through an awful lot of gaunts.
-I throw these guys in a transport, and use them to hunt tyranid warriors. Sure, taking down gaunts with these guys is easy, but they are better served going after mid-range synapse (Warriors, Zoanthropes). I usually equip the transport with starcannons to take out the tyrant guard/warp field tyrants.
-Rangers aren't worth their points, but pathfinders are cheap for what they do. (odd how that worked out) These guys are your go-to unit for hunting Fexes, tyrant guard, other high-toughness/good save units. Put these guys in some good cover with a wide field of view, and they own. These guys should only fear Lictors.
-Great toughness, stands up to anything but a carnifex. My wraithlord punched a hive tyrant in the face. over and over again. Additionally, they have free flamers which as we all know is a nice bonus against the gribbly horde. Against tyranids, virtually any weapon is useful. so, just throw one on that fits your points budget, and you will be fine. Also serves as a great nit to tie up the weaker gaunts, until a more dedicated unit can finish the victims off.
-Their strength, coupled with their range, and impressive area of effect will eat large chunks of gaunt broods. Even puts some sting against more heavily armored units like stealers with extended carapace, warriors with Ex. Carapace. (All of the support weapons have a use, but you will find that the D-cannon is probably the least useful against nids.)
-The Dual fire mode makes this a really valuable against the nids. It will draw as much firepower as the nids can muster because of it.
-Grenade packs can ruin a gaunt brood's day. Then, unleashing the volume of shots that these guys can put out can definitely make the nid player take notice. (Especially if the target unit is Doomed.) Put them in such a way that if the nids were to charge them, it would put them farther away from your main force/mission objective. As an added bonus, if they survive the assault, skyleap away. leaving the nids wondering "Which way did he go George, which way did he go?"
-These can unleash death into the nids. But of he catches you with anything...they will fail. They will fail in epic proportions. But if you can keep them alive...they will really make the nids consider their approach points.
I would not advise banshees, nor Jain Zar. Unless you have the models, or jus like what they can do. The ability to ignore armor is pretty moot against most tyranids. The only thing that the banshees are good against are stealers/broodlords that have been Doomed. You get to go first, and will likely kill enough to reduce retaliatory attacks. But if you are still stuck in combat, your destruction will likely be imminent. If you need a Phoenix Lord, I would suggest Karandaras.
* "I'm Significant!" -screamed the dust speck
* "Call me old fashioned, but an evil ascension to power just isn't the same without someone chanting faux Latin in the background."
If you are making a list that will see a lot of tyranids I would select components that are going to be able to keep out of close combat. Fire prisms/falcons, jetbikes for troops, maybe a farseer or two with eldrich storm on a jetbike for more template goodness on their fast units or even stealers.
While scorps/banshees could do a good job in CC, if I were you I'd just avoid it and use some dragons in a falcon or waveserpent (if they get the chance they will wipe out a fex or even a tyrant and his guards).
Fast attack could be vypers although shining spears can be surprisingly effective in shooting and can really surprise a carnifex on assault.
Haha, not to worry my fellow Cerebrate. Use it as a chance to gain insight on our new prey!
In my experience as a Nid player, Scorpions are damn good against gaunts. However, not much is that good against Genestealers in combat... doom them, shoot them, just don't let them charge you!
Forsaken's advice is all very good though. I would add that Eldar are particularly tricky for Nids because of your skimmers. Most of our anti-tank is rending, but this is almost comlpetely negated by your annoying vehicles. Therefore, all we can rely on for anti-skimmer is shooty-TMC's and Zoanthropes... take these out and your skimmers are safe (plus lots of other units)
Tyranids: 2500 pts
Imperial Guard: 1000 pts
Witch Hunters: 1000 pts
I would avoid CC if possible. nething in the HS section will do you good. 2 fire prisms, war warlker squadron, basically any support weapon(id choose shadow weaver since it has high S and no ap wont matter really against nids.) I probably wouldnt use wrathlords unless u have the mmodel already. Id tryand take out the big boys with heavy weapons or just avoid them all together, his fex will more than likely be industractable. Since theexperienced nid player will fit him with almost everything sine hell see u have all this heavy support coming at him.
Direavengers for warrior broods? not a bad idea.
I would probably sacrifice a 2nd prism for a war walker squadron and a battery of shadow weavers.
swooping hawks will give him a head ache.
vypers with scatter lasers and S cannons will work.
Basically anything with alot of fire power. to try and mow down as much as you can. Then when he gets to you, you will need something to hold him off, Then scorpions should do the trick. or avengers with both exarch powers.
all i know is i hate fighting a carnifex. :-) happy bug hunting.
A note on the shining spears.
Tyranids don't have much in the way of AP1,2, or 3 ranged weapons. Just the psychic power and acid spores.
What this means is that a squad of shining spears with a farseer fortuning them have a very good chance of making it through the shooting phase since they'll get a 3+ with re-roll against the stuff coming at them.
And while you don't want to let them get charged, when they are doing the charging they can really demolish Carnifexes as they should finish the fex before it gets a chance to strike back.
Also until your oponent gets used to you and puts Int improving upgrades on everything they can those spears will also rip up warriors and even take it to tyrants in a pinch.
The fortuning thing would also work well on a maxed sized unit of regular jetbikes. True a unit like that would cost, with jetbike farseer, around 400pts depending on whether you want to give the seer spirit stones or not. On the other hand that's four shurican cannons that the nids will be very hard pressed to deal with as they glide around the board at 18" per turn.

If you're big on taking a Phoniex Lord, Jain Zar or Kharandras are both decent choices. Jain Zar will be great at cutting holes in units of Genestealers with her many high Strength attacks (and the silent death will help, too). Kharandras would be better suited to taking down Monstrous Creatures like a Carnifex, as he gets a nice 8 attacks on the charge. He'll be hitting on 3's and wounding on 2's against almost the entire army (some Carnifi are known to have a higher Toughness) and since he's a Phoniex Lord, he won't be squished instantly by anything.
