With regard to the Piranha Tactica thread, I thought I'd swing it a bit and introduce this unit to you players out there.
In order to use TX-42 you will naturally need to get the model from Forgeworld. These are a lovely edition to your army and if you already use Piranha's in your lists I would recommend these. In addition, you will also need the Imperial Armour Update 2006 for the rules. Unfortunately there is not anything else in there Tau wise other than the TX-42, but it is nice to see what the other armies can get from Forgeworld and their relative stats; such as the awesome looking bloodthirster or the Imperial Guard Bombard... but anyway back onto the TX-42.
Naturally I cant be too specific but I will be as vague as possible. As you can see from the model (if you have not seen it click here to go to forgeworld), it does not have drones and instead has twin linked weapons.
In its standard configuration, it comes with a targetting array in the same way the hammerhead does and its twin linked weapons are fusion blasters. Its side armour is the same as the front. It remains open topped.
Now the big thing about this skimmer by comparison to the regular Piranha (apart from the obvious advantage of twin linked weapons), is that the weapons can be changed to Missile pods, Plasma Rifles or Rail Rifles.
This clearly gives the skimmer the ability to have a completely different role to the regular Piranha with its Fusion Blaster Tactics. You can still equip the TX-42 with all the same vehicle wargear as a regular Piranha.
I personally think this is a GREAT unit and shall be using it instead of my regular piranhas. I am even considering getting another conversion kit to fix up a second. I think that with a couple of Tetra's, the TX-42 can create a great diversion away from any of your tanks as well as do the usual boost-to-rear and fire seeker missiles.
In general as I really like the look of the Tau skimmers I am going to be giving them a thorough play test (as if I have not used them enough already to know how fun they are to use).
Please feel free to comment, and Riki I would appreciate your imput as I feel that this unit is considerably stronger than the current Piranha varient (and is effectively the same cost-points wise - give or take 10-15 points for the weapon configs/additional wargear).
A very quick list has been put together here if you are interested in general points costs of these new units. I don't think this list is too unreasonable, but you may think so. Either way, any comments are more than welcome.
I like the idea of the the missile pods simply because of the stand of range they offer, move the TX-42 12" and stay well back for a useful nuisance unit.
The plasma (are they twin linked?) and rail rifles to my mind are not so usefull 1 shot (even twinlinked) does not seem overly useful.
Let me know how they go, because despite what some think I do not despise pirahnas, I was in fact looking forward to using them, I just feel they are a wasted opportunity which the TX may put right, though they are forge world which limits them
Are the rules in the Imp Armor update? I thought they were only experimental rules. Saw the rules here, for free, from FW...
I think it would be fun to have these, tetras, and pirhanas for a skimmer heavy army - like an Air or Naval force. It is 20 more points but, as mentioned, you get a targeting array. But no drones. And linked - seems worth the points.
I can see missile-pod armed X-42s working in wonderful conjunction with Helios commanders...
Now to talk my opponent into letting me kill him...er.... letting me play them.:shifty:
"Listen up you primitive screwheads ... see this ... this is my BOOM-stick!" - Ash
"I told you, it's not Pink! It's Light Red!" Donut on his new power-armor.
Darby, well spotted... but yes it is in the update and is cheaper than in the pdf (see my army list to figure it out), but otherwise is identical!
Riki, all weapons equiped are indeed twin linked. I can see the merits of using Plasma Rifles, but at the extra points cost? Hmmm, not so sure; and having to get 12" away for rapid fire... and not being able to jump back like a Crisis suit can... not worth the risk imo... rather stay at 36" with a tetra behind me markerlighting up the targets...
I'm a big fan of this variant of the piranha, as you can equip it to solve its most glaring problem: A lack of range. I'd have a much more favorable view of them if these were in the codex.
Ask yourself why in the world would you trust a win loss record? Playing them yourself is the only way to tell.
The true joy in the game is playing down to the last model, no matter the odds.
I really think they should have given the pirahna an option of a missile pod in the current codex. It doesn't need the plasma rifle or rail rifle, it just needs those s7 shots that allow it to compete with deathrains and still come up behind a leman russ and but some firepower into the rear armor.
