Welcome to Librarium Online!
Pretty simple question really. Still shopping around for my next army (a process which takes months for me, because of a lack of decisiveness), and I would like to know: In the new Nids Codex, is it possible to to field a non-leaping gaunt with Scything Talons, as opposed to a gun?
While this is technically a rules question, I do feel that given it can be answered with a simple "yes" or "no", and that I shall garner no information on things such as cost, or brood sizes, or anything else, that it is not really against the spirit of the "Don't give out rules" rule. Rather, it is just aimed at helping me to decide on my next army without requiring me to drive across town to the only GW in town to check 1 codex entry in the store-codex.
Is it a gaunt? yes
does it have scything talons? yes
it's a hormogaunt. That's basically all there is to it. You could do the scything gaunts in 3rd, but not 4th.
Under the current codex, a gaunt has scything talons if and only if it has leaping.
Rippers swarms with a few biomorphs can be a good alternative to the scything Gaunts which are no longer an option. They will generally not be as fast but they don't go instinctive and they can be given leaping to speed them up. They are also much tough with thier multiple wounds.
