Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm new to 40k and would like a few suggestions on a 500pt Eldar force, which I wanna make up from my recently purchased goods.
I bought the 40k rulebook and new eldar codex, I also bought:
A squad of Dark Reapers + Exarch
A squad of Warp Spiders + Exarch
And a box of Guardians (seems like players are dropping these fast for Dire Avengers now?)
I know this makes up way more than 500pts, but I wanna pick out a selection that's reliable and good in a beginner's hands. I haven't got some seemingly important elements (Wraithlord, Falcon, etc) because they were not stocked at this store. Does anyone have a tried and tested, solid little 500pt'er that's good against all-comers? I wanna get painting up and stuck into some action very soon...
Thanks in advance!

You will need two weapons platforms before you can use the guardians, and you will need them as your 2 mandatory troop choices.
Here's the 500 pt list I would field:As you can see 500 point is not that much. Many of your model are just too points heavy for this size of army. But I believe this is a good 500pt list. The guardians will take care of infantry. The Wave Serpent is intitially transporting a guardian squad but drops it so that they can shoot and it can go take potshots with its missile launchers.Farseer
Twin linked EMLs
Kai Shin Craftworld (Biel Tan / Ulthwe) 5000 pts
Emperor's Children 2000 pts
Why take a wave serpent with nothing to transport? I know its still useable for the heavy weapons, but if he takes 2 lots of defender guardians then he is starting down the path of a shooty army which might not even include squads which need a serpent.
Could you fit in the dark reapers instead?
Dark Elves - Game #28 vs High Elves: Draw

A waithlord is unstoppable at 500 points! or even better the avatar!
10 Dire Avengers /w Exarch w/2 shuricats w/bladestorm
1 war walker /w 2 EML
PTS, you do need to pick up another troop selection. I would either buy a few Pathfinders, or get a box of Dire Avengers to shove into that Wave Serpant. Take the list that Hsin Dragon gave you, swapping a Gaurdian Squad with the Dire Avengers, and you've got a very solid list that would work well against just about everyone at 500pts.
Nights Justice Space Marines
Eldar Eth Kariel Craftworld
Spear of Kurnous - High Elf Expeditionary Army
fine drop the dire avengers for guardians. Upgrade the war walker to reapers.
5 Pathfinders 120
10 Guardians w/ shuriken cannon 85
4 Reapers 140
PTS, here is your first problem, there is a quote in the eldar codex, something like "ask not a question of the Eldar for he will give you three answers, each true and all horifying to know" well that is true of Edlar generals
Eldar armies tend to be some of the more complicated and difficult to use well
This is principly because most Eldar units are masters of one thing and pretty pathetic at anything else, and thus very fragile. Eldar armies therefore are made up of things that need to fit together and are used in that way, an eldar generaly can not afford for his units to be misussed because the unit will break and usually his whole stratergy will shatter.
Compare this to a marine army where each unit is highly durable and far more forgiving, and you will understand why you may get people telling you the eldar are not an army for new players, however this is not necessarily the case. dont get succered in to not playing them.
Now the other thing there is that each eldar general will have a different army, because of the aforementioned specialisation and fragility of units, the result for any given army is that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Accordingly a unit that fits well with one eldar army may be completely useless to another - hence opinions on units are often subjective and whilst entirely valid if taken in isolation or from the originators army, they are not necessarily valid for another generals army..
So, that gives us two choices:
1. you can tell us how you want your army to work (read the craftworld section in the codex for example, does any of that appeal to you, if so which craftworld, do you have a preference of shooting or assault based? etc)
2. we can all bomb off and give you our versions of what an eldar army looks like, all of which will be valid and entirely contradictory, and you can get very confused,
Personnaly I think 1, is the way to go
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Thanks to all that responded, it's really given me direction.
Here's what I think I'll go with:
8 Dire Avengers (including Exarch)
2 Shuriken Catapult swap
Twin linked EMLs
Hsin dragon and djones9916 - your suggestions were solid, so I built my force around them.
Greymonk - I think using a Wraithlord or Avatar in 500pt games may be considered overkill by some opponents (though it would be fun). I did take your DA Exarch advice though.
Manu forti - I took into consideration that for realisms sake, Guardians wouldn't jump out of a waveserpent on the first turn, so the DAs are much better suited (and willing to travel). Plus Dark Reapers would make it a static, shooting force (as would any Pathfinders).
Cheredanine - thanks for the insight, and making me think about how I'd play it. Craftworld-wise, I'd like to try them all (with possible exception to Iyanden) to find out which playing style suits me best. I can always flit between them for fun, as my color scheme is pretty vanilla looking.
The forementioned static, shooty army sounded a little dull. I think I'd like to play a 50% shoot / 50% assault eventually. Even though I don't have any assault troops now, I still have the WS and DAs to bring the battle TO the enemy. After unloading, and using the Bladestorm power, I can hit the enemy with 18 shuriken rounds from 8 guys in the first shooting phase. I would even consider the Farseer hop in the WS too (is that possible?), to Doom the targetted enemy, though I would be concerned about his survivability (along with rest of the DA) so close the opponent's line. He'd possibly be more useful Dooming with the Guardian Starcannon (AP2, so takes down well-armored troops much easier than Scatter Laser?). I also had to lose the WS Spirit Stones, though the Vectored Engines still make it very hardy.
(Mods, feel free to move thread into strategies or army list catagories if I'm bending the rules here)

A farseer cannot cast psychic powers while in a transport so he would not do well joining the avengers here. Yes he can join them inside the tank if you want him to though.
That looks like a good solid list for 500 points. The farseer and guardians walk up the board letting the stargun shoot. The wave serpent full of dire avengers is what packs a punch. Especially if you can take out their anti-tank the avengers can do whatever they want.
