hey, i'm thinking of playing 40k and i was wondering what do you guys think of the tau mega force, as it seems that it has all that it takes for a starter set, all bar the piranhas which in my opinion is too many, one piranha just seem the ticket for a balanced force, all in all i might give it a try,
what do you guys think of the mega battleforce? just for some feedback...
When I started, I bought 2 Regular Battleforces... but not the ones i can currently find... its rather odd actually!
The Battleforces I got included some Palm Trees, 12 Kroot, 12 Firewarriors, 2 (or 3) Crisis suits and a whole bunch of drones... for £50 straight out of the shop...
After this I bought a Devilfish, a Hammerhead, and two boxed of 3 Stealths... then I was ready to go... Set me back £170 but I had all I really needed (now I have somewhat more, but that isnt the point)...
If you cant get that from anywhere, then yes the Mega is a good way to go, but I agree, 3 Piranhas is a bit ott.. The most I would use is 2 (though I own 3 Piranhas, 1 Piranha TX42 & 2 Tetras (The latter two are forgeworld))
after thinking about it for a while, i could place each of the piranhas in a fast attack yes, this could fill up all of my fast attack choices but, the enemy will have to think twice about hitting them as he will have to target one at a time, giving them maximum survivability and will make friendly games unfriendly due to the irritation this will give my opponent plus they will be great against armoured companies...:spell:
the possibilites are endless...
thanks for the feedback, though i'm still deciding whether to go for the 2 x battalion sets or the biggie...
You can definately find the old palmtree battleforce boxes on eBay, sold from stores, not just other people.
Now, the only downside I can state regarding buying battleforces is that you get all the miniatures at oce, and the stack of grey unpainted and unassembled models will overwhelm you... And you may find that you burn out on building/painting before you even get half done.
A Better way, but it winds up costing more, is to buy units one at a time, and build/paint them peicemeal as you collect. You can justify this by planning on starting with just 500 point games, and buy those first, then slowly add more and more as you paint them. This will actually yeild a full and painted army, while the stack of sprues staring at you may wind up staring at you for over a year!
..... I spak from personal experience... I bought the Tau Empire Army box when it first came out, and have yet to build even half of it... (just so...many... mold lines to scrape!! oh, the HORROR!!)
I agree with Calaban - if you buy the Tau Empire Army Box you could very well end up being overwhelm by the tons of unfinished models. And I'll say that the Tau Empire Army Box aren't that good imo. But well I had most of what it contains already when I bought it so now I have a lot of models that I most likely never will never use - like the new stealth suits, the ethereal and the drones.
But the Tau Empire Army Box Set is basically everything you need to get started.
Oh how true it all is!
I have 3000 points... I have only completely finished painting 2 hammerheads, 1 of 2 devilfish, 6 stealths and 3 Piranhas... everything else is modelled (and scraped :x ). I have 30 odd firewarriors primed, 32 kroot are still grey and 13 hounds that are in a state of weirdness...
Oh and I have probably half painted 4 out of about 30 drones (Gun, Marker & Shield)... its all very mad... let alone not getting around to doing my 8 Crisis suits... Shadowsun... Farsight and R'Myo! Eeek... now I come to thinkg about it; I should really get on with it... :-p
A suggestion for getting the battleforce in regards to being overwhelmed. Yes it is a ton of stuff to assemble and paint. What I would advise is taking it in steps, one Crisis Suit and two squads of Firewarriors. Assemble them and paint them. Play them a little and then assemble the next thing to use, maybe a Devilfish and a Piranha would be your next pick. Assemble and paint those, and go on from there. Just cause you get it all at once does not mean it all has to be painted at once.
Plus starting with the simple stuff, Crisis Suits and Firewarriors helps you work out your color schemes on models that wont show any bad painting so easily and can be touched up without too much fuss. Instead of say having to repaint a couple tanks... after painting 6 of my tanks the 7th is still sitting there in its primer, I cant bring myself to paint another one for some reason.
The megaforce for the Tau is really not a bad buy, its got a nice balanced force, 3 Piranha's may be a bit much for some people but they can prove useful and will likely be used from time to time. The question to ask yourself is if you are really going to use everything in a battleforce/megaforce. Cause you may save money but if you then have units lying around that you arent using thats not too great. What you can do is just buy two normal battleforce's or get the old battleforce online.
Plus some stores might have their own army deals that you could find.
thanks for the tips guys, i'll certainly put the mega battleforce or the 2xbattleforce idea into consideration, i was thinking about about the tip that Sqaliix pointed out and that seems like a good idea with the mega battleforce as i'm just finding cheaper deals out of minis so that i can collect a force, starting small at first, without expending too much on boxes of sqauds and sets.
although i'm still deciding(decisions, decisions, ooooooooooohh so many)...
My mate just picked up his Tau mega battleforce today along with some black spraypaint. I'm about to go order myself 2 Dark Eldar battlefoces and a bunch of other blister packs (due to the fact stores around here no longer stock dark eldar).
I honestly think the saving that you get on these paks is too good to pass up. If you can afford to put this much money into the hobby in one go then by all means do so as it pays off later down the track.
All of this about being overwhelmed by the amount of it i think you don't need to worry about. Take your time, it is a hobby after all. Worst case scenario: put together a squad and dont touch anything else until you're done painting that particular one.
