Welcome to Librarium Online!
Just thought I'd bring this discussion over from the Eldar Forum. The post can be found here
The question is: Are flyers worth using? Has anyone used one/own one? Are they worth their points in annoyance and change of tactics they force upon their opponents? Have they worked for you, and if not why not?
Some things that Immediately spring to mind:
The way they attack is fast and quite deadly
The most cost efficient (points wise and £££ wise) Barracuda has weapons that are similar to the hammerhead.
They are hit on a 6 and always glancing (unless your enemy has AA in which case its utterly foobarred).
Distances shooty wise are increased by 18" so most weapons are out of range.
Can hit pretty much anywhere on the table.
It has utterly naff armour.
AA knocks em out almost instantly - but fortunately there isnt much of this around.
Im sure there are many many more (there has to be), but without having any of the Imperial Armour books to hand, I really cant comment too accurately.
It's just kinda cheezy. Of course they're not going to have AA, if flyers are not part of the regular offical game, and not taken by most people.
Seeing as how flyers represent a huge chunk of points even for the relatively weak ones and are unable to capture objectives, it kinda balances them out being hard to kill. You're generally talking 250-300 pts that are not scoring units and the random nature of flyers means you get little milage out of their weapons as they typically only show up for 3-4 turns in a game if you're lucky. In my experience, they tend to be similar to orbital strikes for inquisition armies as your opponent probably won't be able to get any points for it, but you also aren't getting much for the steep investment either.
