Welcome to Librarium Online!
Okay, I have two questions, one on rules and one to get people's opinion...
First off, am I permitted to choose when to use a shield drone's I save? For instance, say someone shoots at my Helios config. HQ crisis suit and it is AP 4 and not instakill, so I don't want to risk my shield drone dying and I take the armor save and fail, now the HQ has one wound. Then, someone shoots a STR 8, AP 3 weapon at the HQ and I want to use the shield drone's I save.... Can I do this since there is already a wound on the crisis suit?
Okay, the alternative is a shield generator on my Helios commander. I can still have a BS 5 only if I take him as a Shas'O. Does anyone think this is worth the points?
Basically, is it worth taking an I save either way on a Helios commander?
Yes you are allowed to choose what hits your Drone takes, should your commander only take one shot per turn (How unlikely is this), you can Sv* as many as you like. On the other hand, if your commander is hit with enough shots, shots must be applied to him/her.
(If I haven't explained this well post back what you don't understand. I'll try to help.)
To Shas'O or not to Shas'O
You've opened up a whole kettle of worms with this question, Rikki and I have just recently agreed to disagree. But personally I say if you want a Shas'O take it, I don't advise more than one, but ultimately your dicisions are your own and any advice we give you can be thrown out the window.
So, I'll ask you right back: Do you believe it is worth 25pts for a hard point and MEQ CQC power?
To reply to your last question with my opinion, I find taking an invulnerable Sv is definitly worth it (Particularly against armies with lots of high S low Ap weaponry). Lets face it when you play a fluffy list (I do) you get attached to your commanders, seeing them die is heart wrenching.
I make a point of never laughing at stupid people. They can't help that they're stupid, just as I can't help hitting them.- Aun'Vre
To the first part, lucy handled it pretty well. However in that situation your opponent would get the "torrent of fire" (p.26) rule, and would be able to nominate the shield drone as a casualty if they so choose. Torrent of fire basically says that if your opponent has a number of shots equal to the number of members in a unit, they get to nominate a unit that MUST take a save or take a wound.
Which would mean if you failed its 3+ save, it would be gone. That would leave your commander with no invulnerable save if he had no shield generator, and he'd be insta-killed. But other than that you'd be fine, and alot of people don't know about torrent of fire anyway. Of course, you could always just remember to take the lascannon on the unit that was nominated as a casualty (the shield).
I believe the shas O' is worth it for the shield generator, but only in barrage-heavy environments. My play area is very barrage-heavy, and JSJ basically does nothing against the myriad chaos/IG variants I face. Shield generators are invaluable in this situation.
In environments without heavy barrage, it's really not worth it. JSJ should be sufficient to keep you safe, and even in CC a shas O' with a shield generator is only better than an average marine. The lack of power weapons on the O' is a massive drawback. I've spent many a game locked in combat with my shas O' fighting a single tactical marine, even when the marine had no power/CC weapon or enhancements.

Ask yourself why in the world would you trust a win loss record? Playing them yourself is the only way to tell.
The true joy in the game is playing down to the last model, no matter the odds.
