To all of you out there that might use Vipers in your army lists:
a) What weapons do you take?
b) What upgrades do you go with?
At the moment I'm kind of looking at getting a few of these flyers for the added firepower and speed, but I fear they might not be as effective as I expect.
Out of the weapons choices, Im thinking of going with either a Scatter Laser or an EML for those side/rear armour shots (though the scatter laser should do well there too).
As for the upgrades, clearly Holofields would come in extremely useful and pump up each vipers survivability, but is it worth the points? Same thing with Vectored engines and spirit stones... Star Engines I feel have no use on a Viper.
Also, if you could give me a rough idea of what sort of role your vipers play in your army (with your choice of weapon config stated of course), I would appreciate it (and might give some rep too!).
In my Saim Hann, most of my vypers have star cannon and the shuriken cannon upgrade, they play an anti infantry and where necessary anti transport role
However, that is left over from the last codex, in the new one, with my new army, all of my vypers will have 2xshuriken cannon
Now basicsw of vypers:
vypers have pants BS- so dont choose weapons that are single shot and which you desperately want to hit something (Bright lances, EML)
That leaves you with scatter laser, star cannon and shuriken cannon, whilst shuriken cannon will ignore MEQ armour, it is expensive, the cheapest and most effective option is the 2x shuriken cannon
Now upgrades: As a basic rule, never bother ever, here is why:
Holo field: most small arms can damage you, since all hits are glancing, cos you moved, then a bolter is as effective as a las cannon, this is a waste of points
Spirit stones: Possibly the only one worth considering, and even then only if you have a unit of multiple vypers, since being unable to move one means none can move and all are dead in the water or the others move away from the damaged one and it gets destroyed
Star engines - why?
vectored engines - that many pioints? it only effects one result in 6, why not save up the points and buy another vyper
So if you are looking to use your last couple of points, then possible spirit stones, but otherwise look for somewhere else to spend
How to use them:
Always always move them
Always maximise the number of squads whilst minimising the number of vypers in the squad (eg dont take one squad of 3, take 3 squads of 1
Vypers are fragile, if your opponent makes a concerted effort, he will down them, however, if you focus his mind on other things then they will serve you well, for example:
In an asault or DA based army- drop your vypers just behind your assault/DA your opponent is far more likely to shoot your assault troops or their transport or the DA than the vypers, if he doesnt then he is a fool, and if he does, each vyper is raining down 6 shots on him
In a shooty based army - push them on the flanks, pull his army about, look for side armour on transports, even getting round the rear and hitting the back of his basilisk, vindicator, predetor, defiler, whirlwind, leman Russ,
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Vypers have lost a littel impact since the new codex, this means that many Edlar players have a bit of a downer on them, I can still get good effect and as you say, they are excelent models,
The nightwing is a thing of beauty, althout at 285points for TLshuriken cannon and ELbright lances, it is perhaps over priced, but not much fear of it getting hit, it will be included wherever possible simply for the fact it is such a beautiful model, I would take three but couldnt fit in any war walkers in that case
The nightwing, for my purposes, is providing AT, if you are not concerned about this, then pheonix may well be a good choice (the downgrade in star cannon means that the void dragon is IMHO not worth it compared to the standard pheonix)
Everything you have been told is a lie!
