Welcome to Librarium Online!
Well, its been a difficult choice, but the wraithlord has swung it for me and ive just bought the eldar codex so I can start collecting my second army. (nids is my first love but ive got enough of them now!)
So, here's my first totally new and dumb questions to everyone here!
Warp spiders: From what i can gather not alot of people field them. Why? Or am I wrong? I want some cos they sound cool!
Skimmers: I dont want any! Ive promised myself not to give in to their awsome battlefield prowess and go for a completely foot based army. Is this viable? Or am I going to have my ... handed to me on a plate?
Anyway, hope to be getting to know you guys better over the next couple of months!
I say if you like them, get them. You can't go wrong, and they fill a very versatile role - light armour hunting, and general infantry killers... heck, they can even take down MCs if you need them too, simply from sheer volume of fire.
One of my most specific memories of Warp Spiders.... 2000 point game, 1000 of Tau teamed with 1000 of Tau, vs. 2000 of Eldar... the Eldar player's squad of ten Warp Spiders appeared from 12" away, 8" away from my decked out Stealth Squad (costing a grand total of 240 points) - wiped every last one of them from the board, and then warped back to right near their starting point. Very deadly squad.
Don't forget that Eldar are meant to be a fast army, so always have an element of speed in your list.
Hope this helps.
Not take Skimmers first off is a bad idea, they actually take up quiet a bit points for the eldar army and they are too good to miss out on, with the ability to transport small tactical smart units and unload firepower.
I am make a not Wraith army (Biel-Tan), so I have all the aspects. As for Warp Spiders they are bad but they are really specialize, strictly for popping infantry. I've added a Warp-pack Autrach to up the strength of them and they are going to smoke a lot of units thats for sure. As with the Fusion gun on the Autrach he can smoke vehicles as well, jump to the side or rear armor and smok'em (always Penetration is a kicker).
[EDIT]Damit Lost, you beat me *grumble*

Unit of 10 vs. squad of Marines:
20 shots; 13 hit; 11 wound; 4 dead.
Not the best, but they can do it, and that's just rough statistics. There may not even be a chance for the Marines (or other heavy infantry) to return fire, due to their ability to JSJ (not quite as well as Tau, but close enough).
They are also fast enough to move to the side and rear AV of vehicles - 20 S6 shots on AV10 is not bad odds at all.
As for the number 1 can't do without unit/character... I wouldn't say there is one, to be honest. One of the best characters is, of course, the Farseer. You can equip them to fill almost any gap required in your army, as long as you are looking for a support character and not an uber kill-all character.
For troop heavy armies I think a Farseer (for support) and Avatar (psychology/countercharge) are great. The Avatars inspiration combined with conseal can make a defender squad far more survivable. There isnt really a single cant do without unit because Eldar units work in combinations. What would make the best unit depends on what else you have.
Not only is a skimmer free list playable, with the size considerations of the webway its fluffy too.
