What makes the orks so great? Why do you guys play as them? and last, Why would I and imperial guard player want an ork army?
I haven't officially started orks yet, as I have yet to make an army much less play a game, but what attracts me to them is their fluff. I just can't resist the idea of a race of hulking, green fungus men who throw of spores that lay the foundations for their own ecosystem, love to fight, have some steampunk-esque technology (I mean, common, do dread even seem able to go at it with their SM cousins?), and so on.
Now, why should a IG player want an Ork army? Well... I've heard the IG aren't great at CC, so it would be a nice refresher from the shooty gaurd (Although many here say that Orks can be shooty themselves.)
Many players start orks as they want a close combat army that they can easily customize. The fun of playing orks is that your army doesn't have to look serious and everyone still appreciates it. In addition, guard are very traditional in their look, orks are unique. You can paint them however you want, the skin can be a different color. You can make power klaws and guns out of other races like spacemarines and tau, and its ok to do it.
In edition, orks are all about being the best! It gets in you and you don't necessarily want to win, but want to play competitive games because everyone thinks your army stinks. However, look at all the new codexs that are out, then look at the orks... its from 8-10 years ago and never needed to be changed. The rules were written well, the points all make sense and the wargear options are great.
Ever want to have 9 killa kans rumbling across the field where they all have a invulnerable save.. and their barely 50 pts a piece! Play orks. You want fast moving vehicles with twin linked rokkits that you don't care if you lose because you've got 12 more waiting? Play orks. Want to use a Landraider in your army? We can loot that. How about troops that move 12 and assault 12 with 4 attacks off a charge? Use Zagstrukk.
Point is no matter what aspect of the game, orks have something that can do it and make your gaming more enjoyable? Do you like your heavy slots as a guard player? Well we can take the same options as well as Kans, battlewagons, etc
A better question is why don't you want to play orks...
40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
As I tell everyone I play...there is an attitude about Orks from every other player out there that is unique.
If I lose, the thought is, "Well of course the Orks lost...they're Orks!"
Yet, when I win, it's, "Ye gods, man! You lost to Orks?!?"
It's true, they are fun. And as for losing...it doesn't happen as often as you might think.
Things to think about with Orks: They tend to be strong vs. personnel, weak vs. armor. The occasional Zzap gun or Lotted Basilisk aside, Orks don't have a viable equivalent to the twin-linked lascannon or the bright lance. Many Power Klaws are advised to make this work...
If you haven't bought Orks yet, perhaps waiting for the new codex IS a good idea, but only assuming the codex comes out soon, which is looking less and less viable.
SM Player to the SM Player facing my Orks: "Who, in their right mind, moves towards Orks, Hunh?"
Orks are universally loved, regardless of how comeptitive they are. What makes the orks so great? Why do you guys play as them? and last, Why would I and imperial guard player want an ork army?
I would be really, really suprised if anyone ever refuses to face orks simply because they are fun to use and to face.
