I have just purchased a box of Guardians, a Falcon Grav Tank, 1 Jet bike and 2 Warp spiders and the new Codex....
Now, i am going to be ordering more including the ForgeWorld Avatar (which, if you havent seen, it is awsome! here is a link: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/avatar.htm )
What i am wondering is this: where do i go from here?
I have been playing DeathSkull Orks for about 8 years now and i am quite ready to move on. i know that i have a mentality of an Ork which is to say in your face attack attack attack! and i need to break away from that...or do i?
i know i want alot of Howling Banshees & Harliquins & Wraithlords, so i want a very hands on type of army with enough fire power in the rear to back em up. Jet bikes must be included to get that whole in your face type tatic.
all help is appreciated and thanks in advance!

Generally speaking Eldar are a ranged army. There elite units are good for assault and the fast attack units can be proficient at it if used right but as I already said most units are adept at shooting. If you want wraithlords your going to need a farseer or warlock of sorts to stand by him/them. I'd say get more jet bikes and some dire avengers. Or some rangers just for a ranged scouting unit. The choice is yours really depending on how you want to build your eldar army as there are many ways to build it effectively.
Legion Of Everblight: Abyslonia
Protectorate of Menoth: Grand Exemplar Kreoss
You won't need both the Harlies and Banshees at first I don't think. Harlies are also just better, so maybe you can skip the Banshees all together. Fluff/lookwise the Banshees win out, and against non-high toughness armies they are okay.
I'd say to return the Guardians and get Dire Avengers instead. They are much nicer looking, and much more effective.
My favorite unit is tied between the Warp Spiders and Fire Dragons. You'll need to put something in the Falcon to ride around, so I'll suggest the Fire Dragons. Most of the time, the Falcon is just a high priced super reliable Fire Dragon transport.
jet bikes are definately a good choice, i've had great sucess with them. They typically last all game for me, cuz they never really get shot at because of their 6 inch assault move they always get. You definately want as many shuriken cannons as you can get in a squad. They're very good at taking out any kind of target as they get a massive amount of shots, and are very good at getting to the side and rear armour of tanks and blasting them with their cannons.
I've also had great success useing shining spears and harlequins together, i'll typically flank an enemy with shining spears as i come up the middle behind terrain with the harlequins, assault two squads with both of them at the same time and then withdraw behind some cover in the same turn i charged. Its been very effective.
edit: if you use harlie's w/ a shadowseer you won't necissarily need a warlock or farseer to babysit the wraithlord, as the shadowseer is a psyker, i usually just keep the wraithlord at the maximum 6' from the shadowseer and move him up with the harlie's. He doesn't really slow them down either as i usually don't assualt with them till turn 3 or 4.

You don't use Fleet of foot with the Harlies? That is one of their best traits since they can move almost double. Personally you'll have good results with most things, but if you need shooting support either go mobile with Vypers/Fire Prism or less mobile with War Walkers. Of course spears and dragons are good if you want more close up stuff, or a Farseer with warlock guard, they can actually despite seeming popular opinion do good in a fight. No one seems to use them =(
But no matter what you need an HQ and while the Avatar is great, it only goes so fast....
"Thousand Sons! Fight in the Emperor's name!"
DA :8/5/7 Eldar:3/3/5 1KSons:3/1/2
I agree with you about the avatar, he is a great hq choice for some armies, but if you wanna play a quick, close quarter's kind of eldar army he's probably not the right hq because he's too slow. He's better for static, shooting armies imho. I use an Autarch on a jetbike and put him with my shining spears, he's very fast and very good in close combat, but if ugluk is going to use banshees i would definately suggest a farseer, like you said. The farseer can doom the banshees target, and you're right, with warlocks they are a good assault squad, probably just as good as scorpions, but they're expensive, so you gotta be extra careful with them. Of course i guess you could always take a farseer and an avatar

If you want to play in your face then probably, as others have said, the Avatar is too slow to be effective, although arguably he may draw fire from the wraithlords
Otherwise, you have an eclectic mix of advice, which is about right given your start point, if you want to focus what you want a little more, perhaps put up a list then I am sure we can give you more help
Everything you have been told is a lie!
I recommend you play a few games with what you have to determine how you want your Eldar to function or to figure out what you deemed missing/needed on top of your existing stuff. Due to the large variety of units and their different uses many different types of Eldar armies can be formed so it's not easy of a single person to say what you should get next.
I have a Eldar Tactica linked up in my Signiture for new players mainly so its worth having a look in there as it explains much about different units and their roles, in addition to various combinations with other units.
great, thanks for all the replies.
i will post an army list tonight or tommarow then.
but the bottom line is this: i want a hand to hand type Eldar army.
lets see if i can pull it off
and Heiromyo, the Tatica is a great help.
