Does anyone use a pheonix lord? Ive been reading them and fancy taking one, but the points cost is just too much, i mean, I could have the avatar for less than any lord.
So, has anyone used one and are they worth the points?
OOO And if you were going to include one, which one would you take and why?
Hi Mace, hope all is going well,
Re Pheonix lords, although they havent changed much since last Dex, all this is last Dex:
There was an extensive discusion and generally Asurymen was accepted as the best. Morgan Ra is quite effective and did see rather widespread use during the Eye of Terror campaign, Khadros is generally escewed as the mini is top heavy due to an absurd hat. myself I have used Jain Zahr occasionally with my Ulthwe and found her eminently lethal, although ususaly by turn 5 the banshees surrounding her have been shot away and it ends up with attempts to shoot her and her attempting to get into combat witout being shot
Baharoth used to be a souped up version of the hawk exarch, making him pretty lethal in close combat, not sure about now though, havent really looked as pheonix lords dont appeal to me
Everything you have been told is a lie!
Fuegan now looks very difficult to kill. No sudden death, impervious to wounds... plus he's the only Phoenix Lord that can do something his squad isn't even remotely capable of doing: fighting in HTH, dishing out pain and whitstanding punishment.
Problems? High point cost. I'd take him only for fluff purposes.
i think maugan ra is the best IMO, because he has a longer ranged shuricannon thats causes rending and pinning and if put with a unit of dark reapers that pinning effect comes in handy when trying to keep those charges away from your reapers. Also he is the second cheapest PL and definately can handle his own in combat. I've taken down hive tyrants, chaos lords, ect with this guy.
I'd rather take a Farseer, Autarch, or Avatar than a Phoenix Lord. They are very expensive, and you don't get too many benefits that will actually be.. well, beneficial, when you take them.
I like Jain Zar, though, just for the high strength Triskele... that, coupled with the really nice BS, would slice through some squads with relative ease.
Assault cannon with pinning plus good close combat ability.
But Prince Yriel is by far the best HQ for me.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
I like the look of the rules for the Pheonix Lords and I think some of them are worth what their points are. As indepandant character killers and that, they can be very effective.
I also think that in a Squad, if used correctly, they could be highly effective.
And the fact that they get higher base strength and toughness is good as well.
That said, I can not for the life of me bring myself to use one of their seemingly first edition models. They are so old and could be so much better than they are.
But oh well.
But I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
If their cost was similar to an Avatar I'd probably play Jain Zar or Maugan Ra against some opponents. But considering they cost more then an Avatar and nearly as much as an expensive Khornate's Daemon Prince...I'd rather pick Autarch+Farseer, or Avatar + Farseer.

Offensively each is probably worth their weight in gold (In this case probably iron and points) but defensively they arn't much to talk about, just a bit tougher to kill than a space marine due to the fact that they have no invulnurable saves (Apart from asuryen, which is why most would probably consider him the best).
However their abilities shine the most if you place with a squad of their own aspect, with a bodygaurd of infantry to protect them from being picked off and combined killing power you have one hell of a deadly unit, you can even add a wave serpent if you want the extra movement. I would say some of the combinations can be as deadly as those Dark Eldar Lord and Incubi combos or Blood Marines special unit thingy.
So to maximise the offensive attribute these guys bring I would probably pick the Striking Scorpion or Howling Banshee Phoenix lords. Looks wise I do love the Swooping Hawk Phoenix lord too.
My 2 HQ's are avatar and maugen ra, I take maugen because he is fluffy with 3 squads of dark reapers and as others have said he complements their shooty with his assualt cannon and in close combat he can hold his own. So far he has been very effective in every game i have played.
Only problem i have with him(and all the pl's cept asurman) is they dont have invulnarable saves.
