Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm still working on starting up a small DE Army and I hear everyone rave about Wyches. When I look at their entry in the Codex, I fail to see what makes them so special. The Wych weapons seem confusing... they only apply to one model in the squad? It seems like it would be difficult having to single them all out in use each round.
Plus, they have the weakest save in the game, only one base attack, and I just fail to see how they are such good killers. They aren't super cheap models... and I see lots of them dying in a round of combat, especially since their S, T, and Sv are so low.
Am I missing something here?
Fleet of foot, 2 CC weapons, wych weapons, invulnerable CC save, cheap, succubus is a killing machine. Overall it's potential is pretty equal to a genestealer, and at times wyches are even better.
But overall -
2 CC weapons - means a lot of attacks on a charge
Invulerable save - immunity to power weapons, rendering powerfists and swords 50% useless
Drugs - the wyches are going to tacticaly change depending on the roll. So their potential is always constantly changing depending on what role you get.
Fleet - makes them very fast, 6" move, d6" fleet, 6" charge
Wych weapons - godly tools, 1/2 enemy WS and enemy fights with basic # of attacks
Price - relatively cheap compared to what great potential they possesse
Succubus - with agoniser, its an unstopable killing machine, way better then sergeants/squad leaders of other 40k armies.
Maybe I didn't read the entry clearly enough... but where do they get an invulnerable to CC save? That does sound pretty awesome. Can you please reference a page for me?
Basically for cost of a tactical squad you get a unit that can disembowel 3/4 of enemies in the game.
While they aren't uber killy like say, possessed are they maim most things.
With the 12" charge roll on combat drugs you get a sickening potential assault range-
12" with raider
D6" fleet (for example we will take 6")
12" assault range (with a lucky drug roll) =
Potential 32" charge range.
I'd like to see anything else outrun that.
Keep in mind, Wyches aren't the best killing squad going around. They're only S3, and only one can get a power weapon.
What they DO do well is hold their own in CC against just about ANYTHING, whilst still whittling the enemy down a little. Wych weapons mean that enemies will hit less often, and get fewer attacks in their first place (well, some of them), and depending how you play the rule (there's contention), the Wyches hit more often as well. And even when your enemy finally hits, half of those will be saved by the Wyches' invulernerable save. Many squads rely on their ability to ignore armour, so when that disapepars, they're in trouble.
Eldar Howling Banshees are one of the most feared CC squads going around. They have decent Weapon Skill, 2 close combat weapons, and most importantly, power weapons. But if they attack Wyches, they lose the extra attack for the 2 CCWs, their weapon skill decreases (which admittedly doesn't make it harder for them to hit in this case, unless Wyches rolled the +1 WS combat drug), and then their main selling point, their power weapons, might as well be regular CC weapons because of the Wyches' invulnerable save.
Apart from the wych weapons, as people have already said, they're fairly quick, with Fleet of Foot, and usually a Raider transport. Their combat drugs can be very useful as well. Rolling the 12" charge drug generally means a guaranteed 1st turn charge. +1 Attack or +1 Strength makes them more effective at killing. And the +1 WS is huge, because it means that all those WS4 things will now need 5s to hit (whereas without the +1 WS they'd still require 4s).
But they do have flaws as you have noticed. You can not let your wyches be shot at. Their armor save is crap. If a raider goes down (especially if it moved over 6'') or your wyches are left in the open and are shot at, be prepaired for mass casualties.
Is it possible I have an outdated codex? Since I haven't bought my army yet I'm reviewing a Dark Eldar codex that one of my friends had.
Under special rules for wyches on page 9, all I see is stuff on Combat Drugs and then a listing of the Wych Weapons.
This is odd... I didn't think the Dark Eldar had more than one codex. That dodge ability sounds great though... guess I'll have to run out to the local store and buy a new copy of the codex then.
The latest one should should have a big stamp saying second printing on it.
Easily it makes wyches far superior to the first printing (they are a bit crap there).
