Welcome to Librarium Online!
I need some advice or ideas for a bug army that can hold its own against Space Marines. BT, BA and the likes. I am leaning towards a TMC heavy or "Zilla" type army with as many genestealers as I can afford. Throw in a little fast attack so he can not just pick me off at will. plz help I have never done 40K before but have done historical & modern armor table top. I have a good understanding of tactics but an still getting familliar with the rule set & game mechanics. Anyone want to take a stab at helping me CRUSH some marine commanders & the occasional foolish Eldar general??? Plz. the mic is open..

Well for starters if you are doing a 'zilla list' the start with HQ. I suggest a winged hivetyrant with two pairs of scything talons. Give him an adrenal gland, toxin sacs and an implant attack for killing Marine characters. Also make sure it has a warpfield.
If you also want loads of Genestealers then you could get a Broodlord. For elites get three Carnifex's. Give them either two pairs of scything talons or two twinlinked devourers and enhanched senses. The ones with scything talons will be good at crushing things in assault but will be slow. The ones with devourers will be decent at shooting him up, over time the devourers can take a good toll on Marines.
For troops you probably want loads of Genestealers, I suggest you give them extended carapace because it will make them last much longer. Scuttlers is also a handy thing to have. Feeder tendrils is cheap. It won't help the Genestealers but it will help the Carnifex's.
For some fast attack I suggest Raveners with rending claws. You can use either pair of the arms that come on the Genstealer sprue to represent the claws. This means you will need to give a Genestealer brood scything talons. A brood of Raveners will be handy in slithering up quickly.
For heavy support there are two main options for the Carnifex's of a 'zilla list'. Super assault Fex's or Sniper fex's. Basically Carnifex's given scything talons, crushing claws and adrenal glands plus a host of other nasty abilities. The sniper fex is a Carnifex with a barbed strangler and a venom cannon plus enhanced senses. They are good as an artillery weapon. Don't go for a twinlinked barbed strangler or a twinlinked venom cannon because they aren't worth the points.
You will need to protect them. Give them extended carapace and bonded exoskeleton. Those two work well together. You can further beef them up with reinforced chitin and regenerate. Reinforced chitin and regenerate work well together because you will have more wounds to work with so the regenerate will be more potent.
Dont forget the red terror. Its a monstrous creature too and often overlooked.
For your troops, in a nidzilla list, go stealers all the way. Also think about gargoyles if your not sure about raveners. They will help alot due to having bio plasma.
Personally im not fond of nidzilla. I prefare a mix. Heres how I go about creating a list, hope it helps.
Id start with a flyrant. Twin scything talons or twin devourers. (Twin Devs give you 12 shots with re rolls to hit and wound, nice against horde army's like imperial guard) Next a broodlord with 5-7 stealers for his retinue. (Keep it small so you can infiltrate easier) Give them all Extended carapace, and think about scything talons since its such a small brude.
Now my hq is sorted id look at getting some anti tank. Well nothing kills tanks like a sniperfex. Venom cannon and barbed strangler, and at least one or two defense upgrades. Either +Toughness, +wound or +save. NEVER take toxin sacs, your weapons are already maxxed out on strength.
Now, thats the odd tank taken care of, what about his troops? STEALERS! Youve already got one brood of stealers with the broodlord, so take on unit of about 10-12. Maybe two units, but that should do in most cases. Always give them extended carapace, but i personally dont bother with anything else.
Now how to stop your guys getting shot? Spine gaunts! LOTS and LOTS of spine gaunts. 2 or three units of about 20 will do. That will give you plenty of meatshields and wont cost you too much.
That right there is a playable army, but of course your gonna want some added extra's! Perhaps some hormagaunts for fast assaulting? (I dont like them anymore, they just dont kill enough for what they cost, spine gaunts do pretty much the same job for half the cost, and gargoyles do soo much more for only an extra 2 points.) Another sniperfex is always very tasty, and perhaps an elite fex with 2 sets of twin devourers? Zoanthropes are excellent synapse providers, they hardly ever die and have enough firepower to take out tanks! (when they eventually score a hit!) Warriors are another synapse option, but for their cost, die too easily for my liking. Raveners and gargoyles make great fast hitting units, and lictors have a great psycological effect on the enemy.
Pick and choose what you like. Just remember, more is better! Except when it comes to biomorphs. Your a swarm, be a swarm! Try not to spend too much on biomorphs, just enough to give you the edge!
