Welcome to Librarium Online!
Been battling back and forth about what army I want to start next. I'm starting to lean more and more twords DE. I want a CC oriented army, and I like things that few other people do.
I know that a DE army is expensive, but are there any tips you guys can tell me to help me save money? For example, I like the battleforce box, it saves a lot of money vs buying all that stuff seperatly, but 5 Jetbikes seem excessive to me. Would a person use that many? And if yes...would a person use 10? (if I bought 2 battleforce boxes?)
Anyway, just any tips you can tell me so I don't waste a bunch of money no models I won't use would be really appreciated.
Okay I'm looking at starting as well but I can answer one of your questions.Jetbikes are last minute objective takers, and they tend to be a nuisance to opponents.I like the battleforce box, it saves a lot of money vs buying all that stuff seperatly, but 5 Jetbikes seem excessive to me. Would a person use that many? And if yes...would a person use 10? (if I bought 2 battleforce boxes?)

I don't think ive ever seen anybody use 10 jetbikes but the most common setup that many others along with myself use is the 6 jetbike, 2 blaster and succubus. Those blasters allow you to speed up to your opponents flank and maybe bag a tank or two. Also IMO the battleforce is one of the best things to get as it doesn't have any of the rubbish models (gtrotesques, mandrakes, hellions, and scourges.) as these are only really ever used by vet. players as they're rules are sometimes very complex and they are extremely fragile.
Things that most people use are Warriors, Wyches and Incubi. These are probably the best thing we got going for us. You may want to buy a lot of raiders for your units or instead get just a few and opt to go for a WWP army instead. Also ravagers are nasty and i definately encourage you to get one (or two). Thats really all I can think of right now. hope it helps
The best method for cheap army building is to make an army list of the most common point value you will play and only buy what you need to make that list. For example our local tourney organizer uses 1800 but we usually play 1500 in the store so...
Make an 1800 list, strip it down to 1500 points, likewise for 1000 and 500. Now you have 4 lists at different point values and a list of models needed to build them.
For 1000 points though a solid base would be: 1 lord, 6 incubi, 10 wyches, 40 warriors 2 raiders, Ravager. (2 dark lances, 2 splinter cannons, 2 sybarites, 1 succubus)
Ebay is usually the cheapest way to get models but they usually are prebuilt and painted.
There are several US based online ordering companies that have better 'retail' prices than GW,

DE can be both shooty and amazing in CC. You want a more CC oriented force and there are lots of ways to go. The nice thing is whether you go kabal or Cult, the force can have a very similar look. For instance, I use normally play a cult with @ 40 wyches. A cult can't take things like Haemmies or Taloi. I could easily make it a kabal taking three elite wych squads and a dracite w/ retinue and then take Taloi. Or use an incubi retinue instead of wyches.
Your best assault units are wyches, Incubi and the HQ's. They are your hard hitters and can stand up to just about anything. Wyches are possibly the best assault unit in the game. Coming out of portal and assaulting off a raider (open topped), you can get anywhere from 19-31" depending on if you get a good fleet or have the 12' drug charge. And wyches cost about as much as a marine. Incubi are great as well with a good save and hard hitting weapon.
1. You can't go wrong by grabbing 30-40 warriors
2. decide which CC troops you want to take.
a) For wyches, you can get the gw models, use modified warrior models, Dark Elf fantasy witches, Wood elf War dancers.
b) Incubi, can get the gm models, use the dark elf fantasy or again modify DE warriors.
3. Raiders You will need a raider for every CC unit. DE units do not last out in the open. Wyches and warriors alike whither from small arms fire. You can modify raiders and make them into ravagers and save money using magnets.
Ebay has some great Auctions which can save you money on warriors and sometimes raiders. I would probably pick up one battleforce box and then look on ebay for some warriors and raiders.
Jet bikes really depend on the player. I have 8 and don't often use them. I used to use two groups of 4 with blasters. Other people use them to great effect. I would try out the 5 in the box and see if you like them. You can always convert one or two into bikes for your lords.
In my current 1850 list, I use 4 raiders, 2 ravagers, 34 warriors (elites), 1 hq with wych retinue, 1 hq on foot (cheap dracite with poison blades and a warp portal) 3 troop squads of 10 wyches each(wyches are troops in a cult) and a kroot carnivore squad. Most people use 30+ warriors in a list and 4+ raiders. Hope this helps.
In a few words, you should only buy the units that you plan to use often. These units are wyches, warriors, raiders and at least one ravager. The battleforce is a good purchase since you get a raider squad, 10 warriors and a jetbike unit of 5. Jetbikes are very expensive if you buy them seperately so I recommend the battleforce to start with.
To begin collecting eldar, I suggest starting a 1k point army. You willl need a lord, at least 20 warriors, a unit of wyches on a raider, and a single ravager. These units are the core, without them there can be no game. With a battleforce you can cancel out the 20 warrior and raider requirement, as well as get 5 jetbikes.
A wych unt doesnt have to consist of DE wyches, you can get some dark elf wyches and convert them, I personaly use howling banshees for my wyches but thats just my way of collecting them. GW is a total rip off, so there is absolutely no reason to waste money there. I suggest ebay, or online websites which usually sell them for about $10 cheaper
Ravager is tricky one as there is a lot of ebay competition for these things, and usually you wont find them anywhere for cheaper then $30. Also, there are no currect auctions ending within the next 7 days containing a ravager on ebay, unless you plan to buy a whole army. So I suggest either onlione store or just wait and take your chances.
An HQ lord can be converted to save money, OR you can buy the Astrubael model and use the ravager as a tank while the body guards can act like your lords. I personaly use them and am quite happy with the way the look, the two incubi with long cloaks, and punishers do u know what I am talking about? This way you have the lord and the ravager.
Once you have these requirements out of the way, its pretty mmuch up to you what else you wish to get depending on what tactics and army you wish to use.
MY PERSONALY SUGGESTION:
I highly recommend the battleforce to be ur #1 purchase, this way you have 20 warriors, a raider and 5 bikes.
Next is a lord, I suggest you simple convert one to save money.
Next you should get 10 wyches and another raider, how you wish to model your wyches is up to you. I personaly hate the DE wyches so I use howling banshees.
Lastly get a ravager, ebay or online store as either will probably cost the same amount as ravagers are quite popular on ebay thus attract a lot of bids in the last 30 seconds of the auction.
After this its up to you as you have the core of you army completed, your personality and way of playing will probably tell you what to get to further enchance your tactics.
If you arent sure about something, just ask there is plenty of people here that can help you out...
